I actually grew up in Dellview, arriving in 1966 and remaining there until 1986. My mother, Laura Marie Dellinger Thompson was the Chairman of the City Counsel. My grandmother Oni Dellinger was the Mayor from 1925 until her death. I was Chief of Police for a while (though I was just in my teens and they never let me have an actual gun. My brother Robert Fones Thompson, was Fire Chief.

The story of how the town got started is the common tale but the real reason is much more prosaic. In 1925 the nearby town of Cherryville began to be wired for electricity. Unfortunately it was about five miles away from Dellview and the power lines were being run in from the side opposite from where Dellview was located. My grandfather, James Henry Dellinger, (and his brother A.T.) owned two homesteads next to one another and had a cousin, David P. Dellinger, who was a member of the NC State Legislature. When they asked him to see what could be done to get the power lines run out to their property they were informed that they would have to pay to have it done at a highly prohibitive cost. However, if they were an official municipality it would have to be done at the expense of the power company. David slipped the legislation to incorporate the two properties as a town through when not many people were watching. In order to do that they developed the whole "shoot the stray dogs" tale so it wouldn't look like anything too shady was being done at the expense of the other county residents who wouldn't get power for several years yet.

So....

...the moral is, always have a crooked relative in a position of power.

One other interesting fact. The town line ran right down the middle of the county road that ran along in front of both properties. There was even discussion back in the late '60's about setting up the world's weirdest speed-trap. We could have dropped the speed limit on the lane running into Cherryville to 20 mph, set up a lawnchair at the end of the town limit and just written speeding tickets all day. On the lane running out of Cherryville we couldn't do a thing as it was outside the town limits. But we decided that might not be looked on too favorably by the other local residents so we dropped the idea. After all, we had to live there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.207.253.101 (talk) 21:25, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
