Another meaning

[edit]

here's another meaning I can't quite explain -- 790 (talk) 09:15, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just so I don't leave this hanging after cleaning up the page... The reference above is to the Sacremento Fire Department web page, which included: "The Fire Reserves are dispatched to multiple alarm fires, Level 3 Haz-Mat incidents, DART calls, USAR activations, and other emergencies whenever additional resources are required."
In this context it's short for "Disaster Assessment Recovery Team" (see [1]) or " Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team" (see [2]).
Wikipedia doesn't have articles on those generic teams; but does have Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (a specific such team in Singapore) and Disaster Assistance Response Team (a specific such team in Canada). Both are on the DAB page (and were already present at the time of the above comment). TJRC (talk) 00:29, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Paper plane

[edit]

Isn't paper dart another name for paper plane? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.72.12.115 (talk) 07:31, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, paper dart is not another name for paper plane. Superkittydance (talk) 19:26, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Turns out that it is. [3] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:642:4600:3F80:14CA:1B75:64B1:F2C5 (talk) 00:20, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 8 August 2018

The result of the move request was: no consensus, not moved. Perhaps a reflection of the imbalance between male and female editors that nobody has until now pointed out that Dart (sewing) gets nearly the identical number of page views as Dart (missile) (page view stats). – wbm1058 (talk) 13:59, 18 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DartDart (disambiguation) – The dart as used in Darts is the primary topic for "Dart". This page should be moved to the disambiguation title Dart (disambiguation), and "Dart" should redirect to Darts per WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT. TJRC (talk) 23:03, 8 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

The above discussion reached no conclusion as to a primary topic for the purpose of moving the page. I am told, dubiously, that because of this I cannot change the primary topic link. Why should that link be to the game, rather than to the missiles that it uses? The missiles obviously precede the game, and the name of the game "darts" does not match the page name, "dart." That makes it an odd choice to pull out of the list for special treatment. 2601:642:4600:3F80:F037:7860:6CBD:A7BB (talk) 15:26, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Because there is no primary topic. Period. I don't see how you can possibly come to any other interpretation of WP:MOSDAB, in particular MOS:DABPRIMARY, MOS:DABINTRO, and MOS:DABORDER. Now MOS:DABORDER point #2 allows for a few of the most commonly sought items to be grouped together below the intro line, but that is quite different from the edits you've been making to the lead. Perhaps there are some other stylistic improvements that could be made, but certainly not to imply that there is a primary topic where there is none. olderwiser 15:51, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Some additional data points:
  1. WikiNav outgoing pageviews suggest that most people do not go to either the game or the missile article after arriving at the disambiguation page. Several other articles (such as Double Asteroid Redirection Test, Dart (programming language), Dallas Area Rapid Transit, Dublin Area Rapid Transit) are more common destinations than either.
  2. In terms of raw pageviews for articles with Dart as the main term, the programming language is roughly equivalent to the game.
  3. In terms of page viewsfor the most popular articles listed on the dab page (I included only items with more views overall than Dart (missile)), views of the article for the game Darts is roughly equivalent to those for Dart (programming language), Double Asteroid Redirection Test, and Dodge Dart -- again suggesting that neither the missile nor the game are the primary topic. olderwiser 16:22, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If there is no primary topic, period, then why does one topic, which you say that most people do not go to, appear on the page as if it were one? 2601:642:4600:3F80:F037:7860:6CBD:A7BB (talk) 17:41, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It isn't in primary topic format -- but like I said Perhaps there are some other stylistic improvements that could be made. olderwiser 17:53, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
