"Convolvulaceae" is plural

[edit]

I reverted the change back to a singular verb because in scientific nomenclature, all names above genus are treated as plural. The subject of the first sentence is Convolvulaceae, not family or group. It is considered improper to say "Convolvulaceae is..."

One way around this is to include the taxon category, which would render it singular. So, "the family Convolvulaceae is..." would be proper. However, this is edging toward mention as opposed to use, which is more the province of dictionaries and technical manuals concerned with the name rather than the organisms the name refers to (see Use-mention distinction).

Also, it is generally discouraged among taxonomists to put the article "the" in front of a taxon name. Admittedly, it is possible to find lots of examples in the literature and in other encyclopedias of incorrect usage of scientific nomenclature. I think we can do better.

If you disagree with this analysis, I am happy to discuss it and would be happy to provide references. Thanks.Michaplot (talk) 09:16, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
