Wikipedia as a guideline to use English when naming articles. This is particularly so when there is established usage in English language sources. The title of this article appears to have initially been copied and translated from the French Wikipedia article Maison centrale de Conakry without an attempt to find corresponding English language sources. Both articles are similar, and even share a common citation. However, the omission of the French definite article "La" from the title changes the meaning in a machine translation of the French article rendering it as "Conakry Central House" rather than as the central prison of Conakry. While the article's title, Maison Centrale de Conakry, is not in English, no attempt has even been made to translate the name in the lead, otherwise it would read central prison of Conakry.
While there are four sources cited for this article, are all in French. However, at least 3 of the websites the sources originate from also have English language versions. The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), in particular, provides its reports in multiple languages, so I am surprised only the French translation of its report has been cited, not the English translation of its report for the same period. While it should be possible to locate an English translation on the website, the URL to the French version is broken, so needs some research to find the cited source.
Amnesty International also offers the their cited report in both French and English language translations. In this case the URL's are identical except for the language version of fr for French and en for English. Amnesty's articles appear to be good translations attributed to the same author, where, in the French, his report refers to "maison centrale de Conakry", in the English his report says "central prison in Conakry", but this is the only occasion it is mentioned this way. Elsewhere, this report refers to "Conakry central prison" (once), "Conakry's central prison" (once), "Conakry's main prison" (once) or most often "Conakry prison" (3 times). However, even in the French, this author refers to "prison centrale de Conakry" five times, compared to only referring to "maison centrale de Conakry" once.
Even France 24 offers an English version, and while the two versions use different URL's for the different languages, I am sure that given a bit of time to search the website the equivalent English article can be found. However, even the French article calls this prison "prison civile de Conakry", not Maison Centrale de Conakry. So I even have my doubts about even the French version of this article's title satisfying Wikipedia's naming criteria. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 08:08, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have boldly moved this article to Conakry central prison. See WP:ENGLISH, WP:ESTABLISHED and WP:USEENGLISH. Also, see MOS:AT for an explanation for the lack of capitalization in the title. This is because "central prison is not treated as a proper name in English language sources I have read, so should remain in lower case. To be consistent, I have changed the name of the prison in the body of the article, too. Even so, I am still open to having the shorter title, "Conakry prison", if English language sources support that name. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 23:07, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
