I have changed the importance of this article to "Top". The reason is - Chittagong is the largest Sea Port of Bangladesh, the Commercial Capital of Bangladesh and also a place of high historical and cultural significance. Hence it qualifies the requirement for being rated as TOP important, which is - an English language encyclopedia must have an article on this topic.-Arman Aziz 08:01, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

I think the role of "Mastar da" Surya Sen needs to be added in the History section. Can someone add it? I don't have the detailed history right now, but the "Armory Case" was a pivotal movement in the Indian Freedom Movement.

Professionalism

I feel that although this is a beautiful description of Chittagong and Chittagonians, it is not written to a standard appropriate for an encyclopedia. It sounds a little too dramatic and poetic and I have begun the process of wikifying and removing POVs. If someone else can go through and help out, this will be much faster. The information is all good - it's just that some of the flowery descriptions and epic wording needs to be toned down. Thanks!

Biases, missing information and absence of rigorous analysis

There is a lot of information in this article - but none of it is substantiated. There are no references, no independent views and no systematic and chronological observations from a historical perspective.

"SameerKhan" understates this by saying it is "poetic". It is far from poetic - and more a case of fantasizing. A common perception of the muslim citizens of Pakistan and Bangladesh is the assumption that history begins with the advent of Islam to the sub-continent.

Chittagaon existed long before the "Arabs" or "Mughals" discovered it. Moreover, Chittagaon had a significant Hindu population (the entire district had a significantly larger Hindu/Buddhist population than Muslim) prior to partition - given over to East Pakistan solely because it was the only port that could serve the rest of the province. Significant portions of Hindu migration from Bangladesh to India are due to persecution. While recently, this persecution has reached fever-pitch, it existed prior to 1971.

A more studied and analytical article would be helpful. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.89.122.201 (talkcontribs)

Whoever you are, you seem to have enough "analytical knowledge" about the past of Chittagong, so why don't you do this "studied and analytical job" yourself? Anyway, this is the first time that I have come across this funny information that Chittagong was 'given over' to East Pakistan because it was the only port in the region. Your analytical genius seems to have become confused with heavy-handed and self styled history lessons - provided by God knows who! Besides, you are talking about 'persecution' of people which (as per your analysis) has reached a fever pitch these days!!! Who are you and where do you live to pan out ridiculous gibberish about Chittagong? Can you furnish any proof in support of your lunatic claims? I challenge you! Not 'Language', but 'Dialect'

The 'Language' section of the article was faulty becasue Chattigaiya was not a seperate language, but a dialect of Bengali. So I have changed it completely. Any thoughtful comments or further change is welcome. Kazimostak 17:55, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

It was not faulty. I added a reference to a highly-respected linguistic organization. --SameerKhan 18:41, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Please reformat

The article is long but does not include a lot of information that the reader might need. I suggest someone editing to conform to wiki's templates for major cities. Dhaka is an excellent example. The additional historical and cultural details can be added to new articles linked from the main page.

copyvio

This whole article is a massive copyvio. Copyscape shows a lot of text directly copied from elsewhere. --Ragib 05:15, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

I have removed some parts

I have removed Cox's Bazaar section because Cox's Bazaar is by no definition under Chittagong city - it is not even under Chittagong district. I have also removed the image of "Cittagonian People". The image doesn't reflect any cultural distinctiveness of the people of Chittagong. Even the face and dress of the photographed individuals are not clearly discernible.-Arman Aziz 02:24, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Please do check the article for cut-pasted text ... most of the article was taken verbatim from websites. --Ragib 03:32, 1 May 2007 (UTC)Chittagong is home to thusar, thuhin, and tarin

Are these valid statements? If so, they should be rest ored to the article with citations from reliable sources.Fconaway (talk) 10:32, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Chattagam

Is this the same city? I've seen this spelling (or rather "Chāţţagām") in many places (8680 hits on Google), and it seems to be at least in the same general area, but I can't determine if they're just alternate spellings or if it's a different city nearby. WP doesn't have an article for Chattagam, so I have to assume it's probably just an alternate spelling - in which case it should redirect here, but I'll leave it to people that know better. Lurlock (talk) 14:36, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

In Bengali language, the city's name is "চট্টগ্রাম", i.e. Chattagram. --Ragib (talk) 05:28, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Stormy weather

Famous people

There really needs to be a section listing famous persons who were born or lived in Chittagong. Currently, it only mentions a few cricketers, and Muhammad Yunus is mentioned elsewhere in the article. Other well-known personalities, e.g. Sri Chinmoy is not mentioned. An update is necessary.Avman89 (talk) 03:39, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

An image used in this article, File:University of Chittagong.jpg, has been nominated for speedy deletion at Wikimedia Commons for the following reason: Copyright violations
What should I do?

Don't panic; deletions can take a little longer at Commons than they do on Wikipedia. This gives you an opportunity to contest the deletion (although please review Commons guidelines before doing so). The best way to contest this form of deletion is by posting on the image talk page.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to upload it to Wikipedia (Commons does not allow fair use)
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale then it cannot be uploaded or used.
  • If the image has already been deleted you may want to try Commons Undeletion Request

Port of Chittagong

There is absolutely no information about the Port of Chittagong in the 'Economy and development' section. Port of Chittagong is an important part of Chittagong. Ahnaaf (talk) 06:28, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Cheng Ho & Chittagong

The current version of the page gave Zheng He's Chinese as Chit-le-gang, which (a) makes no sense as 'chit' isn't a Chinese syllable and (b) is not what was given by the source cited. I fixed that (it was Cheh-ti-gan) but the name could still use some looking after.

a) Zheng He didn't romanize anything. We could use the actual characters.
b) Since everyone omits Wade's apostrophes, the sounds intended by the source's version might be Zhedigan or Chitikan or any combination of their pieces. There's a reason the present romanization system of the PRC and ROC (and, fwiw, Wikipedia) is now pinyin and we could use it here once we know the characters.
c) That would serve but still wouldn't be the period sound. Various formats of a table of reconstructed Old and Middle Chinese can be found here or via the linked cite in the Yellow River article discussing the Huang He's original pronunciation.

Cheers. — LlywelynII 02:04, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Chittagong#Chittagong_Hill_Tracts, this section should be excluded as CHTs are not under Chittagong metropolis. - Rahat | 17:16, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

History

The history section should at least be comparable to that of Kochi and Guangzhou. Presently, there is hardly any information on the rich historical records of Chittagong, including numerous Chinese, Arab and European accounts. There is only one sentence on Harikela and Samatata, and almost nothing about its position on Asian trade routes, like the pearl trade, shipbuilding and seafaring industries, and the exports of Bengal.--Bazaan (talk) 18:46, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

We need an expert of Bangladesh history in this case. The history section needs major clean up, there is an undue weight to Chittagong armory raid. Moreover, sections on Geography, Health and Demographics need to be expanded. Bazaan, Ctg4Rahat (ping). --Zayeem (talk) 11:24, 30 August 2013 (UTC)
Some information about history of ctg can be found here. Don't know whether the source is reliable. Rahat | 18:19, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
That's an interesting link, but it's still traditional religious history, not a solid academic source. Whoever's written the history section relied solely on Banglapedia, and it's an injustice to see such poor coverage of Chittagong and Bangladeshi history overall in Wikipedia. In the case of this article, we need more information on trade routes. For example, this source illustrates the maritime links connecting Makkah, Baghdad, Chittagong and Canton. This is a detailed account by an American traveller in 1839. This article includes the list of prominent historic British businesses in Chittagong (modern commercial history is totally missing in this article). We need to compile a large body of relevant sources and build the section in keeping with a standard of world history. We need expertise with a firm grasp of world context, not local context.--Bazaan (talk) 02:11, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
The article from BuddhismandAustralia.com seems to be useful as it's well referenced with some reliable books. I guess, we can just collect some info from the article and cite them directly with the books than using the article as reference, if the policies permit it. --Zayeem (talk) 08:19, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
Zayeem, There's one thing we definitely must take from this source. The Barua community needs to included in the demographics section. --Bazaan (talk) 15:45, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
Yes it deserves a mention. Let me find some sources.--Zayeem (talk) 15:52, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Mughal-Arakanese battle image

Mughal-Arakanese battle on the Karnaphuli river (1660)

i have uploaded an image of mughal/arakanese war in ctg. Any of the image from the article should be replced by this image as the section already flooded with of images. - Rahat | 19:23, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

I have found a research paper on Arakan rule in Chittagong, which was previously published on Asiatic Society Journal. Ctg's history from 900 to 1666 AD can be found in this article with references from books. Arakan rule in Chittagong (1550--1666 A.D)

Lead is too convoluted

For god's sake, someone please trim down the lead. This is a major South Asian city and it deserves a far better quality of coverage.--203.112.78.22 (talk) 13:37, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Economy

The economy section lacks any solid information on the Economy of Chittagong. We need figures on the city's trade, industry and exports, which are worth several billion dollars. And the city itself accounts for one fourth of national GDP.--Bazaan (talk) 17:06, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Changes to the introduction

The introduction was indeed very glorified and full of unnecessary, non-notable crap. I have shortened it, focusing on the contemporary position of Chittagong as a major Indian Ocean port, and the historical evolution of the city. I would be glad to discuss and have reviews from fellow editors.--Uck22 (talk) 02:49, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Nice work, but since you have rewritten the lead, make sure the citations are well placed. --Zayeem (talk) 13:42, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

environmental

Should not the ship-breaking yards and the child labor it employs be mentioned?Cyclopsga (talk) 04:49, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Chittagong University and CUET

I think information of Chittagong University and CUET should no be included in this article. These institutions are not under Chittagong Metropolitan Area. - Rahat (Talk * Contributions) 14:45, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Lead

Is there a need for such a large chunk of history in the introduction? If you look at lead sections in other port city articles like Casablanca and Karachi, its better to have it focused on the contemporary city.--180.234.103.202 (talk) 00:02, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
