The main ideas behind computing the Characteristic variety are contained in https://www.math.utah.edu/~milicic/Eprints/dmodules.pdf

Namely, the procedure is to

  1. Using the filtered ring structure on the ring of differential operators to construct an associated graded ring
  2. Construct an induced filtration on the modules, and consider the associated graded module
  3. Compute the support/the annihilator of this module. Spec of the radical of this ideal will give the characteristic variety
