"Cited" quotations

[edit]

The construction of this article--particularly the way certain quotations are taken directly from secondary sources and stuck in quotes but without in text attribution, much less explanation/context--reads quite bizarrely — Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.147.121.145 (talk) 21:37, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

John vs. James

[edit]

How embarrassing - we've had the first name of the main character wrong since it was added almost 18 months ago! Thanks to "User:Doctofero" for spotting it! - DavidWBrooks 17:33, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure where anyone got the idea that his name is James. If you don't have a copy on hand, pull up Burmese Days on books.google.com and search for John Flory. Tyler 15:42, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have a copy and I could have sworn it does say "James"; I'll check tonight - as does this Amazon link [1] and several other links I could find (e.g., [2]). On the other hand, I found other links, more of them I think, that say it's "John"; is it possible the name was different in different printings? - DavidWBrooks 16:05, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here's a link [3] that uses BOTH James Flory AND John Flory in different places! - DavidWBrooks 16:07, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I checked my edition - a 1962 paperback printing by Harcourt Brace - and it's James, not John. So I guess I'll edit the article to reflect this uncertainty. - DavidWBrooks 21:45, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Graham Greene

[edit]

It says in the article that Burmese Days has been favourably compared with Graham Greene. This is somewhat of an understatement. As regards Burmese Days and The Heart of the Matter, I've never before read two stories that are so similar, with so many corresponding characters, corresponding themes, and both with similar tropical British colonial backdrops. If you can find an authoritative source which agrees with your point by all means include it.Motmit (talk) 17:59, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have read both books and I don't think they are that similar. PatGallacher (talk) 16:56, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
