"Graduate Assistant at Carroll College"

[edit]

Carroll College does not have a graduate program. I fail to see how he can be characterized as anything other than an employee of his dads during the season after he graduated. Can someone fix this, along with the Coaching Career Box? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.117.130.168 (talk) 15:00, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Return to Louisville"

[edit]

Why is section 3.5 of the article still here? merely a bad joke with nothing to back it up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ponyboyfloyd (talkcontribs) 09:17, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No, the first two-sentences of the article are "Robert Patrick "Bobby" Petrino (born March 10, 1961)[2] is an American football coach, currently the head coach at Louisville. From 2008 to 2011, he coached the University of Arkansas until his dismissal in the spring of 2012 for having an "inappropriate relationship" with a female employee." Not only is that run-on and merging aspects of the career, but the first is also grammatically incorrect - it should be "...who is currently the head coach..." The second sentence is linguistically incorrect, and should be "...He was head coach at the University of Arkansas from 2008 until his dismissal in the spring of 2012 for..." - currently it states that he coached there until 2011, yet that he wasn't dismissed until 2012. Additionally, a single paragraph mentions virtually every former employer as a "mentor," as noted by the individual who followed my original comment. There are many such problems in this article, which is what I was pointing out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:CD3E:8BE0:D02F:8FBA:78DA:3280 (talk) 02:38, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Poor editing

[edit]

This article was already updated to say "ACC" as conference and "Louisville" as current employer before the announcement (which still hasn't taken place). For a "semi-locked" page, there is still no scrutiny for accuracy. Also, it is littered with grammatical mistakes beginning as early as the 2nd sentence (if the sentence is past-tense, the action verbs within it must be past-tense); how many "mentors" can an individual have in a single paragraph; etc.

- submitted 01/08/2014 9:45PM

I also found the use of "mentor" a bit unclear. "Mentor" means more than just former boss or employer. Unless there's some source showing that his former bosses/employers/supervisors had a "mentor-like" relationship, they should be called something like former boss or former supervisor rather than "mentor." --Nogburt (talk) 02:11, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Better picture

[edit]

Does someone have a definitive source one way or the other on Bobby Petrino's first name? It seems to be causing a low-grade revert war, and that needs to be stopped. FOr now, I'm just leaving it at "Bobby Petrino". - BillCJ 04:56, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not coach at Arkansas

[edit]

Petrino is not the coach at Arkansas. The rumors that he is, are exactly that, rumors and until it's official, it should be removed from this article. I've read several "news reports" that says he's staying in the NFL. So again, until the University of Arkansas or Petrino himself says he's the head coach at Arkansas, it should not be in this article. Period. -- ALLSTARecho 00:45, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Petrino is the new coach at Arkansas and they're far more than rumors. His article should be edited to reflect that. Period. Enigmaman (talk) 00:59, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
it was made official on the ESPN networks (ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN Classic, ESPNEWS, and ESPNU) as well as ESPN.com.--Boutitbenza 69 9 (talk) 01:06, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The word from ESPN [1] is that multiple sources have told ESPN that Petrino is negotiating a position with Arkansas right now. Not quite official yet, but I would not be suprised to see him as head coach of Arkansas tomorrow. Kesac (talk) 01:13, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
"would not be surprised"? How about I guarantee you he's the head coach of Arkansas. It's not just ESPN. The AP, Sports Illustrated, CBS Sportsline, and every other sports media outlet reported it hours ago. Enigmaman (talk) 01:29, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Enigmaman is right. There's about a million websites reporting this right now. ––Bender235 (talk) 02:01, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And yet the Arkansas Democrat Gazette , which is there at "ground zero", is saying at [2] that Petrino is staying in the NFL. So until Petrino or Arkansas says he's the coach, it shouldn't be included. -- ALLSTARecho 02:07, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That news you cited is from about 15 hours ago. Right now there reporting a different story. ––Bender235 (talk) 02:09, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't matter when it's from. It's still not official that he's the coach at Arkansas. What part of that doesn't anyone understand. ESPN is reporting MAYBE, POSSIBLY, NEGOTIATIONS, etc. The source you just posted says PRESUMABLY. That means he's not officially the coach yet and therefore it shouldn't be in the article. -- ALLSTARecho 02:13, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There's a press conference at 10:30 PM, at which Arkansas might announce Santa Claus as their new mascot, or maybe Petrino as their new head coach. We should wait until then before editing this article again. ––Bender235 (talk) 02:16, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Correct, even if being sarcastic. They could be announcing anything. -- ALLSTARecho 02:17, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Everyone knows they're announcing Petrino as the new head coach. Every news source has reported he's taking the job and NO ONE has disputed that. Enigmaman (talk) 02:23, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(Unindent)Correct, but Wikipedia requires verification of that fact. In other words, a reliable source saying that he has taken the job. Kesac (talk) 02:26, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(restoring comment by Chrisjnelson) It's not official, so all that should be on here is what's true now - he's re-signed and he is expected to be the head coach at Arkansas.►Chris NelsonHolla! 01:46, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

-- ALLSTARecho 02:37, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I linked a site that says the press conference is to announce the hiring of Petrino. Arkansas Sports 360. Enigmaman (talk) 02:38, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Then once it's official it can be added. This isn't complicated, buddy. And do NOT delete my comments again.►Chris NelsonHolla! 02:46, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My point is it is being officially reported by several sites. Enigmaman (talk) 03:04, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
But they aren't officially reporting that he officially is the head coach. -- ALLSTARecho 03:07, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I posted a link that said the press conference was to introduce him as the new head coach. Maybe next time you can actually read the links instead of just deleting them. But since you're going to insist that Petrino's page not be updated, I'm not going to fight you, because I don't want to deal with your threats and false accusations anymore. Have fun. Enigmaman (talk) 03:11, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You know why I'm annoyed by your actions? Because I spent hours trying to update the page properly, and then you go and remove it and give me a warning even though you must know that what I posted was accurate. Enigmaman (talk) 03:13, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not that I care why you're annoyed but let's look at the facts. You introduced deliberate factual errors even though you were told many times that it's not official.. yet. I have no doubt that he is the coach/will be the coach but until it's officially reported as official that he is the coach and took the job, you are adding false and incorrect information to an article. Secondly, you deleted comments, TWICE, on this page which is a huge "no no"! People started off nicely saying why the information shouldn't be included at this time and you continued to revert/add the factual errors back. So here's a quarter.. -- ALLSTARecho 03:20, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There you go again with the factual inaccuracies. I deleted ONE comment because we had a comment thread going and it disrupted the page when I tried to add a comment to the existing thread. So score another inaccuracy for you. As for saying what I posted was incorrect, it's not incorrect and you know it. I even sourced the information the last time. You probably even know you're in the wrong here by making a mountain out of a molehill, but you just won't admit it. That's ok. Enigmaman (talk) 04:00, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Both references cited clearly attribute this claim to "sources" and don't officially say he's the new Arkansas coach, so I don't see how we can either without speculating about the future, which is not a good idea per WP:NOT#CRYSTAL. --W.marsh 02:55, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, good call. I just watched the tail end of the live press conference. :) -- ALLSTARecho 04:48, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • All of the Arkansas info has been restored now that it's official. -- ALLSTARecho 04:49, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • The fact that there's a lengthy six hour running discussion over this topic, coupled with the fact that Wikipedia has been overrun with editors who belittle, intimidate, and accuse others of bad faith over the most trivial of matters demonstrates the Wikipedia has jumped the shark. 64.190.140.138 (talk) 22:50, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • The 5th reference is now a dead link and associated line "Despite declaring his intentions..." may not be completely accurate, despite widespread reporting to the contrary. The quote that has been often attributed as evidence that he intended to return for 2008 was a quote from the week before the Rams game in which Petrino said he was "focused on the Rams" nfl.com, basically dodging the question instead of committing to anything. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.56.8.248 (talk) 05:09, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the dead source link. As for the "Despite declaring his intentions...", I've read several media articles today that pretty much support that. I'll leave it to someone else to either source or remove though. -- ALLSTARecho 05:15, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I sourced with a different link. He did in fact declare his intentions to stay with the Falcons, and Blank said the same thing at a joint press conference, IIRC. Enigmaman (talk) 06:05, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article was picked up by the media (and mocked before they ran a correction). [3] Kyaa the Catlord (talk) 08:16, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that article right after he posted it while searching for Bobby Petrino news. I emailed the writer about it. He was being kind of childish about it, hoping wikipedia was wrong so he could gloat about how wikipedia had the news wrong. Weird motivation. He said that wikipedia was wrong in a different case, but that could've just been a case of him looking at the page right after someone edited in news that wasn't verified. Since wikipedia is a living organism and constantly changing, you can spot all kinds of oddities if you show up at the right (or wrong) time. Enigmaman (talk) 09:26, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pat Forde and Bender

[edit]

If you want to post how great Pat Forde thinks Petrino is, make a Praise and Criticism section. There's no reason for the article to be headlined by something Pat Forde said about Petrino. If that, why not a quote from a different writer who called Petrino "one of the biggest snakes alive today"? The article, and especially the first paragraph, should stick to facts, not meaningless quotes from irrelevant writers. Enigmaman (talk) 20:54, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's a "meaningless quote", and further I don't think Pat Forde is an "irrelevant writer". We have that type of quotes everywhere on Wikipedia – i.e. the Greg Oden article citing ESPN's Steve Kerr, who said Oden is a "once-in-a-decade" type of talent, or another one: Benjamin Graham called "Father of Modern Security Analysis" by Warren Buffett (both in the first paragraph!) –, and for a good reason: since we can't write "Petrino is one of the best offensive strategists in football, period," we have to cite "experts" (or at least notable persons) on this. These quotes show how a person's ‘occupation’ is ‘appraised’ by the public, the media, or some experts. Somebody who has never heard of Petrino will read this article and at the line XY called him “one of the best …” he'll know how ‘eminent’ Petrino is compared to Greg Davis or Kevin Sumlin or whoever. Just like he does when he reads Graham is considered "Father of Modern Security Analysis", and subsequently knows how important this man was for today's financial business. ––Bender235 (talk) 21:48, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So like I said, have a section with praise and criticism of Petrino. The opening of an article should stick to facts, not the opinion of some espn.com writer. Enigmaman (talk) 22:50, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why is there a reference to an article that doesn't talk about his "innovative offensive mind"? It only denigrates Petrino. So why leave that reference there? I have tried to correct it by referring to an article that DOES talk about him being an offensive genius, only to see it removed and my hand slapped. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Clearlybiased (talkcontribs) 14:04, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The ESPN article does mention his Offensive skills in the final paragraphs. As for why you were reverted and got a vandalism warning, please read my reply to your note on my talk page. Thanks! Ashanda (talk) 00:52, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Illustrate His Controversial Exit From Atlanta

[edit]

A couple of months ago, I added a paragraph under his Pro coaching career, and later found it deleted. I only cited some quotes concerning Petrino's controversial exit from a couple of sports analysts such as Sean Salisbury and football players such as DeAngelo Hall. --DavidD4scnrt (talk) 05:56, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok?►Chris NelsonHolla! 06:07, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why was it removed? --DavidD4scnrt (talk) 10:44, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone think it would be appropriate if there was a "Controversey" section on Bobby Petrino, regarding his controversial exists? --DavidD4scnrt (talk) 04:19, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • It might be appropriate, if you could find enough sourced, NPOV content. My worry would be edit-warring between Ark/Atl fans. They'll tear any statements that could be conceived as non-NPOV apart. Some might find it non-NPOV to include info from Sean Salisbury and DeAngelo Hall, as they were both emotionally vested and firmly against Petrino. I think that argument has some validity, frankly. CorpITGuy (talk) 20:57, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think it's irresponsible NOT to put a controversy section, even if we just keep quotations in there. There were some pretty choice words from Lawyer Milloy and Joey Harrington, if I remember correctly. Bill shannon (talk) 01:50, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm an Arkansas fan, and I agree completely with Bill shannon. A controversy section should undoubtedly be added. Keep it neutral by providing points and quotes from both sides of the argument, and I think we appease all parties. Mastrchf (t/c) 01:55, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "For his lack of success in his 13 games with the Falcons, Petrino was featured at #1 in the NFL Network program NFL Top 10 under the topic "Coaches Who Belonged in College".The above statement is entirely inaccurate. There were coaches in that list who had worse records that Petrino. Petrino was featured at #1 on that program because of the way he exited the team. What put him at number 1 was his secretly arranging a coaching position with Arkansas in advance, leading the GM to believe he would remain head coach indefinitely just hours before he resigned, and then leaving form letters taped to players lockers in the locker room explaining why he had quit. To exclude this information makes mentioning his appearance on the top 10 list completely irrelevant. Add it, or remove the above statement. --69.145.166.30 (talk) 05:12, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph

[edit]

Can someone please help find a good photograph of Petrino in his Razorback garb? I've stumbled across this entry several times and been confused by the picture of Petrino wearing Louisville's colors. All the pictures I've found so far are copyrighted. CorpITGuy (talk) 20:57, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cameras aren't being allowed in during practices. Hopefully someone can get a shot of him outside of practice. Mastrchf91 (t/c) 20:59, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You could ask some of the people on flickr with photos of him to release the rights. Be careful, some people upload photos they didn't actually take. --Rividian (talk) 22:53, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Replaced my original photo of Petrino in his suit with one I took of him on the sideline from the Red-White game. That should satisfy the photo requests and I removed it from the top of the discussion page. ~ (The Rebel At) ~ 23:29, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Linking to team or university pages

[edit]

It seems there is some inconsistency in regards to linking to the university's page, such as Missouri State University, or linking to the sports team's page for that respective institution, such as Missouri State Bears football. Some pages appear to make the distinction that the person coaches the football team rather than saying they are a coach at a particular institution.

For example, Nick Saban's page reads "head football coach at the University of Alabama" whereas Lane Kiffin's page reads, "Kiffin was the offensive coordinator at the University of Alabama." I'm assuming the referenced article just needs to match how the referencing article is worded. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sir hobbes3 (talkcontribs) 00:16, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
