I don't know how to change it, but the second image of the Duchess, where she's pastorally portrayed in a horizontal composition, holding a crook and flowers is by John Michael Wright, NOT Sir Peter Lely. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.79.170.163 (talk) 17:09, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:COMMON

[edit]

I have always seen her refered to as "Lady Castlemaine". I know this is an inferior title to "Duchess of Cleveland", but Barbara Palmer, Countess of Castlemaine seems to be a far more used name for her and thus in following with WP:COMMON should be the article title IMO. - Yorkshirian (talk) 13:16, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Scum

[edit]

Did she have a son by the actor Cardonnell "Scum" Goodman in 1686? She would have been 45, but this is claimed by the 1911 Britannica.--Streona (talk) 00:01, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Descendants?

[edit]

The article says that Diana, Princess of Wales is one of her descendants. This is also claimed on the wiki page for Louise de Kérouaille. Clearly these can't both be true. Anyone have any references for this? 98.207.155.182 (talk) 06:11, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is true. From http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Charles_II_of_England "Diana, Princess of Wales was descended from two of Charles's illegitimate sons, the Duke of Grafton and the Duke of Richmond (who is also a direct ancestor of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, second wife of Charles, Prince of Wales." Grafton was the son of Barbara Palmer and Richmond was the son of Louise De Kerouaille — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.77.127.106 (talk) 16:24, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dates

[edit]

The Duchess's birth date is given in both Old and New Style dates, however, only a single date is given for her death, and the article does not specify whether it is Old or New style. (Note that England and her colonies continued using Old Style for around another half century after this lady's death.) Since most primary sources will be, by default, Old Style, but the secondary sources the article was based on are likely to default to New Style, the date should be confirmed by checking primary sources, then clarified in the article. Self-referential source

[edit]

The source "https://web.archive.org/web/20070108083555/http://www.arikah.com/encyclopedia/Barbara_Villiers%2C_Duchess_of_Cleveland" is just an earlier copy of the Wikipedia page (see copyright notice at the bottom of the source), making this self-referential. I'm sure a better source could be found, but I didn't find one. Breandán Dalton (talk) 09:21, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
