Personally, I think that "events, births, deaths" is a better order to put these things in than "births, deaths, events," and in the past I have always changed these pages to that order whenever I edit one. When I go to a date page, I believe that the most significant thing is what happened on that day or year, not who was born then; people who were born then generally aren't going to become significant until decades later. User:Bryan Derksen

Agreed, both on preferring that order and on having made such changes. I thought this was our standard. (Of course, I interrupted my once-over of the date pages about 2/3 of the way through the year, and haven't gone back.) Vicki Rosenzweig, Friday, June 14, 2002

Any reason why Ruhlman is famous or just a vandal/vanity? - Texture 21:23, 19 Mar 2004 (UTC)

1995/Netscape

Why was the 1995 entry about Netscape going public reverted? Boris Alexeev

From Netscape's page, it "was the first company to attempt to capitalize on the nascent World Wide Web". Regarding its IPO, we have "Netscape had a successful IPO on August 9, 1995. The stock was to be offered at $14 per share; a last-minute decision doubled the initial offering to $28 per share; the stock's value reached $75 on the first day of trading, which was nearly a record for a stock's first-day gain. The company's revenues doubled every quarter in 1995." Thomas Friedman says, "First, it brought the Internet alive by giving us the browser to display images and data stored on Web sites. Second, the Netscape stock offering triggered the dot-com boom ..." (quote grabbed online).
For comparison,
  • "The Who play at the Hollywood Bowl" has no link, nor is August 9, 2004 mentioned in their article.
  • Betty Boop seems to have premiered on August 8, not August 9, 1930.
  • I argue the The Headington Shark is less famous than Netscape; Google gives under 200 hits for the former.
  • It also seems that the 1965 space disaster isn't mentioned on the Space Disasters page: try searching for "August 9", "Titan", "Little Rock", "Arkansas", or "53".
Good enough? Boris Alexeev 16:09, 17 May 2005 (UTC)
I am adding this back and making some of my suggestions above. If you disagree with this change, please comment here. There was just a Slashdot article on the subject, which is interesting, although perhaps unconvincing. See my reasons above.

Your examples are not reasons: they are relevant to the issue of whether theose should be included but are not the least bit relevant to the Netscape entry: inclusion of one says nothing about exclusion of another. --Calton | Talk 02:19, July 16, 2005 (UTC)

And including some Thomas Friedman puffery doesn't help, either. --Calton | Talk 02:26, July 16, 2005 (UTC)

August 9

Please justify your decision that Netscape's IPO on August 9, 1995 is non-notable. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 18.53.7.119 (talk) 05:03, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Netscape's IPO is not a globally notable event. It is a piece of trivia about Netscape. See the discussion above for more. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 17:16, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Liquididty crisis

Is there a reference for the liquidity crisis starting on this day in particular. The various linked pages just mention "Summer" or "August 2007" as the start, not identifying any particular day. Zeimusu | Talk page 15:13, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

I was wondering the same thing.Rlbarton (talk) 17:35, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

Seems it was added here back in 2008. I have no idea where the August 9th date comes from. I suppose you could try asking Fred Bauder if he remembers where he got it from, but I'm tempted to just remove this. Winston365 (talk) 21:33, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

I think we should. I almost did it this morning.Rlbarton (talk) 22:48, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

I have removed it. Winston365 (talk) 18:50, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Book Lover's Day

I just came across an entry in a Page a Day calendar that refers to Book Lover's Day as being on Aug 10, but most references online say Aug 9. Any one want to look into it and possibly add it here?? Thanks! WesT (talk) 17:02, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Citations are not enough. It needs a Wiki page, as per DOY criteria for inclusion here. --Richardson mcphillips (talk) 12:26, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
