Location

[edit]

The location is not clear. The existing GR is in the middle of the Loch! but close to Askomill district. I have added coord for Island Muller which is further north. Finavon (talk) 19:50, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well spotted. I assumed it was in or near "Askomill" and hadn't see the "Island Muller" further up the coast, which is surely the right one. Ben MacDui 07:46, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Accuracy?

[edit]

The RCAHMS [1] lists nothing for "Askomill House", nor for "Smerby Castle" which redirects here. They do include an entry on Island Muller Castle, which is also a scheduled monument, [2] (again, nothing for Askomill or Smerby Castle).

The references in this article shed little light. The first is a deadlink but the article is archived here. It makes no mention of Askomill House. The second is the OS Map. The third ref is a Clan Macdonell webpage which talks about "Askomull House". It doesn't say exactly where this house is, but the photo caption implies that its near Campbeltown, ie the area known today as Askomill.

So it seems that the ruin on the point is Island Muller Castle, which being near Smerby would equate to "Smerby Castle", but that Askomill House is a separate place. If this is not the case, some decent refs need to be added to show how all these sites are related. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 12:53, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

When I originally created this item, I was of the opinion, through the sources I could find at the time that this was Askomill House (Askomull House). Recent research finds that Angus Macdonald was held in irons at James MacDonald's castle at Smerby. I have been attempting to find the location of Askomill House and move this articles details to Smerby Castle (Island Muller Castle). At this stage I have not found a reference to where this is located apart from near the current Askomill Lower and Askomill Higher near Campbeltown. I am happy to rewrite this article to explain that at this stage, the location of this House near Campbeltown cannot be determined. Reviewing the maps via http://www.nls.uk/ does not make the location clearer, however does give some indication. Regards Newm30 (talk) 00:57, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. I agree that moving this page to Smerby Castle or Island Muller Castle would be the best option. It could even include the Askomill House information, although noting the uncertainly of its location. The RCAHMS and HS refs above include the imprisonment of Angus Macdonald also, so there are plently of refs for an article on the castle. Thanks again, the new article(s) seem to better reflect sources. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 11:53, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
