suemonella,[1] formerly known as secretsue94, was a social experiment TikTok account ran by YouTuber George Mason.[2][3] Mason impersonated as Harry Styles from February 10, 2022 to February 24, 2022.[4] The account mimicked Styles' old Vine shorts[5] and showcased the Spotify Billion Streams Plaque for Watermelon Sugar, which Mason bought that same year.[6]
Motive
[edit]Mason bought the plaque for £3,900 pounds[5] after finding a loophole for ordering one. He chose Styles' Watermelon Sugar which had over 1 billion streams on Spotify.[6]
Timeline
[edit]secretsue94 was created on February 10, 2022 and the first video was uploaded that same day which referenced Styles' vine with disappearing fruit. Mason drew a cross tattoo using Sharpie. The video was captioned 'first tick tock [sic] reminds me of vine'.[7][8]
On February 11, Mason created multiple hoax accounts for Styles' friends, such as Mitch Rowland and Sarah Jones.[8] Mason didn't make any videos on February 12 as Styles was spotted in public recording for a music video.[9]
On February 13, the second video was uploaded, featuring 'Styles' going up pink stairs in a sudden cut fashion. Mason chose to use pink stairs after learning that Harry Styles has pink stairs in his house.[10] 3 days later, paparazzi pictures were taken of Mason carrying the Spotify Plaque and TikTok open on his phone and they were sent to multiple Harry Styles update accounts.[8][10][11]
Mason uploaded the 3rd video on February 19, which had Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield playing in the background while Mason ran in the video. 1 day later, the 4th video was uploaded, taken from an Instagram story from keyboardist Ryan Malcs.[8] Mason changed the username to suemonella in-between the 4th video and 5th videos.[8]
The final videos were uploaded on February 24, 2022, which was recorded inside a professional filming studio. It featured the Spotify Plaque and a stack of paper with the text 'HS3 ANNOUNCEMENT VIDEO'.[12] Mason uploaded a screen recording of him scrolling and 'finding' the video[8][better source needed] and uploaded it to his Harry Styles update account.[8]
Reception
[edit]Response to the account was mixed. Videos on TikTok were uploaded analysing the account.[8] The term #HS3ANNOUNCEMENT went trending on Twitter.[8]
