Bally was born 10 February 1783 in Schönenwerd, the son of Franz Ulrich Bally ( Bohli), a silk merchant turned stonemason, originally from Vorarlberg, Austrian Empire who emigrated to Aarau in the 1770s, and worked for silk ribbon manufacturer Johann Rudolph Meyer.[2]
