Pathaan is a fictional Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) agent and former soldier created by Siddharth Anand and Aditya Chopra for the YRF Spy Universe.[1] The character is portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan and was first introduced in Pathaan (2023).
Overview
[edit]Pathaan is depicted as a highly skilled and patriotic Indian intelligence agent. He created Joint Operations and Covert Research (J.O.C.R), a sub-division of R&AW, that recruits Indian soldiers and agents who were forced to retire due to injury or emotional trauma.[2][3][4] Rubina "Rubai" Mohsin (portrayed by Deepika Padukone), a Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence agent, is his love interest, whom he met during a mission in Spain and Moscow.[5] [6][7] He is one of the three main agents in the universe, along with Tiger (portrayed by Salman Khan) and Kabir (portrayed by Hrithik Roshan).
Fictional character biography
[edit]Early life
[edit]He was found abandoned in a cinema hall and raised in an orphanage, juvenile center, and remand home. The love and care he received motivated him to join the Indian Army, where he served with distinction. [8]
First Mission
[edit]Pathaan's first significant mission took place in 2002 when he participated in a joint operation between the Indian and United States armies to eliminate a Taliban leader, Salauddin Husseini, in Afghanistan. During the mission, Pathaan saved the lives of 30 children and a teacher by diverting a missile, but he was severely injured and fell into a coma. He was cared for by the villagers whose lives he saved, who named him "Pathaan," for his bravery.
Creation of J.O.C.R.
[edit]In 2020, after being severely injured on a mission in Myanmar, Pathaan conceived the idea of creating the Joint Operations and Covert Research (J.O.C.R.) unit, a special task force composed of soldiers who had been injured in service but remained dedicated to their country. The unit, comprising Shweta Bajaj, Joseph Mathews, Rishi Arya, and Raza, became instrumental in several covert operations.
The Raktbeej Conspiracy
[edit]Pathaan's most notable operation involves thwarting the Raktbeej conspiracy, a plot orchestrated by the rogue mercenary Jim (portrayed by John Abraham) and his Outfit X group. Pathaan and his team uncovered and foiled a plan to unleash a deadly mutated virus on India. The mission took Pathaan across several countries, including Dubai, Spain, Russia, and Afghanistan, where he faced numerous challenges, including a personal confrontation with Jim, a former Indian agent who had turned against his country.
Aftermath
[edit]Pathaan is reinstated as the head of J.O.C.R. after the successful prevention of the Raktbeej pandemic.
Prison Break in Pakistan
[edit]Following his reinstatement into RAW, Pathaan successfully executed a daring prison break in Pakistan to rescue his fellow agent, Tiger. The operation involved a high-stakes escape culminating in a dramatic helicopter chase and mid-air rescue.
Appearances
[edit]As of 2024, Pathaan has appeared in two films: Pathaan (2023) and Tiger 3 (2023).[9][10]
