Change to name of the extension

[edit]

I propose changing the contents of this page from "Pending Changes" to "FlaggedRevs". It is one of the only extensions at Special:Version that does not display its actual extension name. This extra level of obfuscation is confusing, and led to someone telling me that mw:Extension:FlaggedRevs is not installed on enwiki, even though it actually is.

Insource search doesn't show any obvious collateral damage. This may only be used on the Special:Version page.

Even though I could action this myself, I'm doing it as a protected edit request because I want one more set of eyes on it in case I am missing something. –Novem Linguae (talk) 08:57, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This seems wrong to me - we call the software "pending changes", not "FlaggedRevs" everywhere else and I don't see a good reason to make an exception on Special:Version. * Pppery * it has begun... 15:56, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I feel it is more organized for software to have exactly one name, and that name should come from the name of its mediawiki extension page, which is also the name of its gerrit repository. Something similar happened with PageTriage on phabricator. The tag used to be named Page Curation on phabricator for some reason, and I successfully got the tag name changed back to PageTriage. I feel that something should not have two names when we can give it one name. –Novem Linguae (talk) 19:45, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
But this edit wouldn't do that as we would still have pages like WP:Pending changes and Wikipedia:Reviewing pending changes. Unless we embrace the name "flagged revisions" and abandon "pending changes" entirely, which would require a much wider discussion than a poorly-watched MediaWiki talk page, then this wouldn't actually achieve your goal. * Pppery * it has begun... 22:30, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The policy name, userright name, type of protection, etc. feel different to me than the name of the software. No biggie though. –Novem Linguae (talk) 22:35, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with @Novem Linguae here, we shouldn't be masking the name of the extension in Special:Version, since the major usecase of Special:Version is for developers (who might/might not be familiar with the culture surrounding enwiki) to know that xyz extension is installed. The fact that the functionality offered by the extension is called something different onwiki, should not matter in Special:Version and should instead be documented in one of our policy page.
