Laurent Lachance (16 March 1931 – 4 October 2024) was a Canadian linguist, author, and schoolteacher.[1]

Biography

[edit]

Born in Montreal on 16 March 1931, Lachance studied at the Université de Montréal. He began his career as a French and Latin teacher at the Collège Sainte-Croix [fr], the Collège St-Paul, and the Collège de Bois-de-Boulogne. He directed educational projects at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education of Quebec from 1968 to 1986 and at Télé-Québec from 1986 to 1993. He created the children's television program Passe-Partout,[2] which gained significant notoriety.[3]Proulx, Steve (17 February 2011). "Passe-Partout". Urbania (in French). Retrieved 12 October 2024. The show fetured the likes of actor Denis Bouchard[4] and was awarded by the Institut de la radiotélévision pour enfants.[5] On 14 November 2007, the National Assembly of Quebec marked the 30th anniversary of the creation of the show.[6] That year, he announced his intention to file a lawsuit against the distributor of the show's DVDs in order to obtain his own right to make profits.[7] However, a court ruled that he was not the owner of the series' copyright.[8] The legal saga continued into 2012,[9][10] when a superior court dismissed the case on merits, though he had the option to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.[11]

In addition to Passe-Partout, Lachance also directed programs by Canal Famille [fr].[12] In 2019, he released Quenotte and Quenoeil, an album of 48 coloring books published online.[13]

Lachance died on 4 October 2024, at the age of 93.[14]
