Kiran Bajracharya (born on Poush 16, 2025 B.S[clarification needed]) is an Additional Inspector General of the Nepal Police.

Policing career

[edit]

Bajracharya's early work focused on investigating crimes against women and children, including human trafficking.[1] Her commitment to this cause became evident during her tenure as the Superintendent of Police between 2013 and 2015. During this period, she led the investigation into numerous organized crime cases and significantly expanded the focus on human trafficking, initiating 14 cases, a dramatic increase from previous years. Her investigations resulted in the arrests and convictions of criminal gang members involved in trafficking and other transnational crimes.[2]

As District Police Chief of Bhaktapur, Bajracharya continued her work in combating human trafficking and raising awareness about modern slavery. She launched awareness campaigns for women working in brick kilns, conducted inspections at checkpoints for potential trafficking victims, and played a critical role in ensuring human rights standards were integrated into police practices. Her focus on police ethics, gender equality, and human rights has been a hallmark of her leadership.[3]

Additional Inspector General of Police

[edit]

In her later career, Bajracharya was promoted to the rank of Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Police, one of the highest-ranking positions in the Nepal Police. As AIG, she took charge of major cases involving high-profile crimes, including the Lalita Niwas Land Grab Scam,[4] the Gold Smuggling Case[5] (Sunkanda[6]), and the Bansbari Land Scam. She was also responsible for the arrest of Nepali Congress lawmaker Sunil Sharma during the CIB's nationwide "Foxtrot Charlie" operation, which targeted individuals involved in fraudulent activities, including the possession of fake academic certificates.

Prior to her role as AIG, Bajracharya served as the in-charge of the Bagmati State Police when she held the position of Deputy Inspector General (DIG). Currently, she is stationed at Valley Police in Kathmandu, where she continues to lead investigations and enforce law and order.[7]

Awards and appreciations

[edit]

In 2016, Kiran Bajracharya was awarded the 'Prabal Jansewa Shree' medal by the President of Nepal for her performance as the District Police Chief of Bhaktapur. The U.S. Department of State named her an anti-slavery hero for her fight against modern-day slavery and human trafficking.[8]
