Jan Suraaj Party (transl. People's Good Governance Party) is a political party launched by poll strategist Prashant Kishor on 2 October 2024 in Bihar, India.[1][2]
Jan Suraaj Padyatra
[edit]Kishor initiated the Jan Suraaj campaign with a padyatra across every district of Bihar on October 2, 2022. During this tour, Kishor and his team are engaging with local communities, aiming to establish grassroots connections and gather insights for policy formulation. The campaign has three stated goals:
- To identify the right individuals at the grassroot level with the help of society and offer them a democratic platform.
- To better understand local problems and opportunities, and based on this, to list the priorities of towns and panchayats, and create a blueprint for their development.
- To prepare a vision document for the next 15 years based on suggestions from experts and the community in ten important areas for Bihar's overall development, including education, health, employment, economic development, agriculture, industry, and social justice.
Plans
[edit]The Jan Suraaj Party has announced its intention to contest all 243 seats in the 2025 Bihar Legislative Assembly election. Party founder Prashant Kishor has outlined a vision to make Bihar one of the "top ten states" in India, proposing several policy initiatives:
- Ending alcohol prohibition and using tax revenue to fund free education for children under 15 in each district.
- Increasing the credit-deposit ratio and providing low-interest loans to stimulate economic growth and reduce migration.
- Raising the monthly pension for senior citizens from ₹400 to ₹2,000.
- Implementing land reforms to improve land ownership statistics.
Kishor has also suggested several electoral reforms, which would be unprecedented in Indian state elections:
- Allowing voters to recall elected representatives after half their term through a no-confidence motion.
- Selecting party nominees six months before elections.
Party Inauguration
[edit]The Jan Suraaj Party held its inauguration event on October 2, 2024, in Patna. During the event, Kishor introduced Manoj Bharti as the party's first Working President. Bharti, a former Indian Foreign Service officer and IIT graduate, comes from the Dalit community. Kishor had previously stated that the party would select a new president annually to represent different communities in Bihar, with the first president coming from the Extremely Backward Classes.
Kishor announced the party's intention to contest all four seats in the upcoming Bihar by-elections. He also stated that the party's constitution and a "vision document" would be released around March 2025.[3]
