Hollywood movies refers to the cinema of United States of America. The Hollywood cinema industry plays an important role among the world movie making studios. It is the third largest film market in the world.[1] Hollywood movies in the 21st century are sometimes called "New Hollywood". Starting from the 2000s, American movies began to earn more fans and contributed to the box office. Science fiction, fantasy films, and animated movies have been globally impacting the movie industry. Research shows that compared to 20th century, the value of the movies approximately doubled.[2] International advertising had a crucial role in making "New Hollywood" bigger, compared to 20th century.[according to whom?] Most of the movies` box office numbers are increased by overseas viewers.[according to whom?]

[edit]Adventure films rank as the top-grossing genre globally.[5] Avatar (2009), directed by James Cameron and produced by Fox Filmed Entertainment, remains the highest-grossing film of all time with $2.8 billion in box-office revenue. Of this total, 72.7% comes from international markets, and 27.3% is domestic.[6] The film had a production budget of $237 million and took 10 years to complete. Avatar won 88 awards, including three Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects.
In second place is Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), the seventh episode in the Star Wars saga and the first of the final trilogy. Directed by J. J. Abrams, it became the highest-grossing film in the Star Wars franchise, with approximately $2 billion in global revenue. Of this, 45.3% came from domestic markets, and 53.7% was international.[7] The film had a production budget of $253 million and won 62 awards, including five Academy Award nominations.
The Lord of the Rings film series, based on J. R. R. Tolkien's novels, has also made a significant impact, particularly at the Academy Awards. The trilogy earned 17 Oscars in total: four for The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), two for The Two Towers (2002), and 11 for The Return of the King (2003), with the latter setting a record for the most Academy Award wins by a single film. The total production budget for the series was $281 million, and the films collectively grossed around $2.9 billion.[8]
The Wizarding World franchise, based on J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, ranks third in global earnings, generating $8.537 billion, with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011) being the highest-grossing entry. However, despite numerous nominations, the series failed to win any Academy Awards.[9]
Animated films also play a vital role in Hollywood's box-office success, with 12 animated films surpassing $1 billion in global revenue as of 2024.[10] The most successful is Inside Out 2 (2024) by Pixar Animation Studios, which grossed $1,682 billion worldwide.

A total of 34 films have been released in the MCU, starting with Iron Man (2008) and continuing through Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), grossing a total of $31.135 billion worldwide. The highest-grossing film in this franchise is Avengers: Endgame (2019), the fourht film in the series, which earned $2.797 billion worldwide.
Comedy ranks as the fourth top-grossing genre of the century.[5] In this category, Barbie (2023) is considered the highest-grossing comedy film of the 21st century, with a production budget of $128–145 million and worldwide box office earnings of $1.446 billion.

In total, 55 films have surpassed the $1 billion mark globally, with 49 of them being produced in the 21st century by the U.S. film industry. The Wizarding World (Warner Bros.
