Spoken article quality assessment

[edit]

Version reviewed: As at 25 July 2008

Technical quality: High/Medium

  • Standard introduction and licence details are present and correct.
  • Voice is clear and does not suffer from any editing artifacts (such as excessive noise reduction).
  • There is background noise, but it is at a constant low level and does not affect the clarity of the voice. Two seconds of slightly louder buzzing at approximately 04:59 (at the line "With U.S. Rep. Barney Frank...").
  • Occasional mouse button clicks.

Clarity: High/Medium

  • Fairly clear enunciation.
  • Pacing is generally good, although longer sentences often have relatively large silent gaps between clauses—especially after commas in the text. A good example is the sentence starting "He was Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security..." (03:27), which has a stop-start flow. This does not affect the listener's understanding of the article, though.
  • Good use of intonation and emphasis to convey the sense of the text.

Accuracy: High/Medium

  • Link to the historical version correctly provided on the upload page.
  • All section headings and subheadings are provided correctly.
  • Very little hesitation and no mid-narration corrections.
  • Some minor variations from the text, none of which compromise the meaning:
  • "...leading state-controlled newspaper" read as "...leading state-controlled newspapers".
  • "...recommending wholesale modernization" read as "...recommended wholesale modernization".
  • "...the only law that was enacted" read as "...the only law that was ever enacted".
  • "...fraudulent and extortionate lawsuits" has a choppy edit and is read as "extraordinate lawsuits".

A good-quality narration which supplements the article well. Many thanks!
