Robert E. Kaplan, MD (born December 5, 1955) is an American pediatrician and pediatric researcher living and practicing in Buffalo, NY. He received a B.A. in political science from Brown University. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is an alumnus and member of the clinical teaching faculty at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. He is affiliated with Oishei Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Kaplan led a team of researchers that established the present protocol for screening healthy children for renal disease in the United States. Other countries have also adopted this protocol. The major advance has been the elimination of routine annual screening urinalysis testing (1,2).
