Nicolas Atanes (Burgos, 2004) is a Spanish activist[1] and mathematics popularizer.[2]
Biography
[edit]Nicolás was born at the Yagüe General Hospital in Burgos, although he moved with his parents to Pamplona when he was only one. The origin of his interest in mathematics was in the sixth grade, when he was the only student in his class to find an error that prevented him from solving a problem. In September 2020, he began studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma at the IES Navarro Villoslada in Pamplona.[3]
Nicolás started in 2020,[4] and has tried to spread the interest in mathematics.[5][6] He started Virus Matemático.[7][8] On 2021, he met Mariya Gabriel, then European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth.[9]
He said that "mathematics […] is necessary, and useful, but the application appears with a theoretical background behind it, and it is also necessary to make this theoretical background known to progress".[10] Also wrote in Diario de Navarra an op-ed saying that "the problem with mechanizing mathematics is that, in the end, many students do not find value or use in this subject."[11]
On July 2024, Atanes participated as a creator in the presentation of routes Discover Catalonia with a mathematical perspective, together with the general director of Tourism, Marta Domènech, the mathematician Eva Miranda, the person in charge of Promotion and Marketing from the Tourism offices of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Pablo Ortega and the head of Communication of the educational division of Casio, as a company collaborating with the project, Eloy Bernal.[12][13][14] On September 2024 presented the route to Terence Tao and Marcus du Sautoy.[15]
Atanes met Pedro Sánchez, he gave a talk to Maria Branyas in Olot about the number 117, and he spoke with the young promising athletes of La Masia.[16]
