Matteo de Nora is a businessman and philanthropist from New Zealand. He is best known for his pivotal role in Emirates Team New Zealand for which he is team principal. He is often referenced as the man who saved Team New Zealand.[1]

Early life and Family

De Nora was born and raised in the United States. His mother is Swiss while his father, Vittorio, was a professor of physics and chemistry at the Milan Polytechnic from Altamura, Italy.[2] His uncle, Oronzio De Nora, the entrepreneur and inventor who founded Industrie De Nora, recently listed on Borsa Italiana.[2][3]

Education and early career

De Nora attended university at Universita Bocconi in Milan.[4] Following university, he worked for Oronzio De Nora, his family's company.[4] He later earned an MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management.[4]

Emirates Team New Zealand

In 2000, de Nora began getting involved in Team New Zealand in the America's Cup.[5] In 2003, he formed the "Mates", a group of benefactors to support the team.[2] He has since become team principal playing a key role in the team including in hosting the 36th America's Cup hosted in Auckland, New Zealand.[6]

He does not have a contractual arrangement with Team New Zealand but supports the team both financially and as a managerial advisor.[7]

Personal Life

De Nora is a citizen of Canada and a resident of Monaco.[2] He is a member of the Monaco Yacht Club committee.[8] He is an active philanthropist, substantively contributing to the response to the 2011 Christchurch earthquake and funding medical research at Auckland University.[7]

In 2011, he was awarded the Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his contributions to yachting and medical philanthropy in New Zealand.[9]
