Dr. Klyatis

Lev Klyatis (born March 4, 1933), is a scientist whose research in engineering focuses on product efficiency successful prediction, including accelerated reliability and durability testing technologies, and accurate simulation of real-world conditions. This leads to the improvement of quality, reliability, safety, maintainability, profit, and life-cycle cost, and other efficiency components[1]. He has authored over 250 scientific papers, 15 books, and holds 30 patents.[1][2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9][10][11] [12][13] [14][15]

Early life and education

Klyatis was born in Kiev, Ukraine. He completed his education at High School No. 10 in Kiev and then attended Dnepropetrovsk Agricultural University[16]. He earned a Ph.D. in Engineering Technology from Belorussia State Agricultural University [17]. Klyatis attained a Doctor of Science degree from Leningrad Agricultural State University [18] and a Habilitation Doctor of Engineering degree from Latvia State Agricultural University. [19]

Career

During his tenure in the Soviet Union, Klyatis served as a Principal Specialist for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) Ministry of Agriculture and chaired a special group at the All-Soviet Union Institute of Mechanization of Agriculture. He was the chair of the Engineering Center TESTMASH, then the State Enterprise TESTMASH, and various research centers in Russia focused on reliability testing and predictive efficiency in engineering.[20] [1]

After migrating to the United States (US) in 1993, Klyatis joined organizations such as the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) and the American Society for Quality (ASQ). He worked with Eccol, Inc., SoHaR, Inc., and served as a professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He collaborated with NASA and engineering companies such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing, BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Carl Schenck, Black and Decker, and others.  

Klyatis served as a member on the US-USSR Trade and Economic Council between 1990-1991.[21]. In 2002 he was appointed the US representative for International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in Aerospace Reliability for international standardization [22]. In 2004, Klyatis represented the IEC on the Advisory Committee (ACOS) Joint Study Group on Safety Aspects of Risk Assessments with the International Standardization Organization (ISO).[23][1]

Klyatis has written several books. In 2006, his book "Accelerated quality and reliability solutions" was published[7]. In 2012 he authored “Accelerated Reliability and Durability Testing Technology [15][11]. In 2018, he authored the "Reliability Prediction and Testing Textbook,"[3] offering comprehensive insights into predictive modeling and testing methodologies[13]. His 2020 publication, "Trends in Development of Accelerated Testing for Automotive and Aerospace Engineering"[4] was selected for the Forbes 100 Best Books of All Time list in Automotive and Aerospace Engineering. In 2023, Klyatis released "Prediction Technologies for Improving Engineering Product Efficiency","[1]

Awards

Klyatis has received several accolades for his contributions to the field, including the ASQ Special Service Award. He received the Outstanding Contribution Award from the SAE International nominated by the Aerospace Council.[1][16][24], and in 2007, he was recognized as a Fellow by the SAE International. He was elected as a Foreign Academician of the Russian Federation Academy for Quality and recognized as an ASQ Fellow for his outstanding innovations in the field of physical simulation, accelerated reliability testing, and accurate prediction that leads to improving quality, reliability, maintainability, and durability during design, manufacturing, and usage; He was recognized as a Fellow by the SAE in 2007 [1] [3][25][26]. In recognition of his contributions, Klyatis was nominated for the Elmer Sperry Award[1]
