On 2 January 2006 about 800 people were protested against the Tata Steel plant, the protestors, largely belonging to the Munda adivasi community were affiliated to Bistapan Virodhi Manch, a group protesting the displacement of adivasi people at Kalinganagar.[1] To quash the protest Special Armed Police Forces were called in. The police fired rubber bullets, tear gas and live rounds at the protestors. No attention was given to the fact that women and children were among them. At least 12 protestors, including 3 women and a 12-year-old boy, were reportedly killed in the police firing, a police constable was also killed in the clash.[1][2][3]
