Kai is a fictional character in the animated television series Ninjago (previously known as Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu) and its sequel series Ninjago: Dragons Rising, both produced by The Lego Group. Created by the original Ninjago screenwriters, Dan and Kevin Hageman, Kai first appeared in the pilot episodes of Ninjago, released in January 2011. A different incarnation of Kai also served as a major character in The Lego Ninjago Movie, released in September 2017. Vincent Tong voices Kai in both series, while Michael Peña voiced the character in the film.

Kai meets Sensei Wu and the three other original Ninja, Jay, Zane, and Cole, after his sister, Nya, is kidnapped by Samukai, the leader of the Skulkin army, who work for Lord Garmadon, the evil brother of Sensei Wu. After they save Nya, they all become a team and continue to fight evil.

Kai is considered as one of the series' most popular characters, being the main character of many of the series' seasons. Kai also frequently appears in outside media, most notably in minifigures featured in the Lego Ninjago sets.

Early life

[edit]

Kai is born to Ray and Maya, the owners of a shop named the Four Weapons. His parents were the previous Elemental Masters of Fire and Water, respectively. He inherited his father's Element of Fire, while his younger sister, Nya, inherited her mother's Element of Water. After their parents mysteriously disappeared, Kai had to raise Nya on his own.
