Draft:Invictus Australia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about Invictus Australia, the legacy organisation of Invictus Games Sydney 2018. For information about the games, see Invictus Games or Warrior Games.

Invictus Australia is a not-for-profit organization that supports the wellbeing of veterans and their families through sport and recreation activities including the Invictus Games, Warrior Games, and local sporting programs. They recognise the unique needs of younger veterans and the challenges they face as they transition from military to civilian life.

Invictus Australia does not offer counselling services, they enable a connection between sport and the defence community.

Launch and History

[edit]

In 2018, Invictus Australia (formerly known as Veteran Sport Australia or VSA), was launched at the end of Invictus Games Sydney 2018. It is owned and operated by the Australian International Military Games[1], a not-for-profit organisation. They are licensed by the Invictus Games Foundation.[2]

The organisation supports all veterans and families whether they are using sports proactively to maintain mental, social, and physical health, or fall into the ‘at-risk’ category through difficulties with injury, medical discharge, reintegration following discharge, or social isolation.[3] They carry on the legacy of the Games every day in local communities by focusing on supporting Australian veterans and active-duty service members and their families in their journey to recovery and rehabilitation through sports.

Invictus Australia is a registered not-for-profit charity and relies on government support, corporate Australia, and the general public for funding. They promote the physical, social, and emotional benefits of sport, and recognise the unique needs of younger veterans and the challenges they face as they transition from military to civilian life.

By utilising sports, they aim to assist veterans with recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration. The Invictus Games provide a platform for competitors to showcase their determination, resilience, and courage while competing in a range of sports including athletics, swimming, wheelchair basketball, and cycling among others. However, a significant part of Invictus Australia’s work centers around organising community programs and events, creating a supportive network for veterans and their families to connect and inspire each other.

Invictus Australia prioritises mental health and collaborates with National Sporting Partners to provide multiple activities around the Nation, implemented by their frontline staff. Sporting partnerships include Surf Life Saving Australia[4], Bowls Australia, Rowing Australia[5], Dragon Boat Federation of Australia[6], Pickleball Australia[7], Water Polo Australia[8], parkrun[9], True Grit[10], Archery Australia[11], Table Tennis Australia[12], Australian Sports Commission[13] and many others. They currently have a presence in Victoria, South Australia, Northern NSW, South Coast of NSW, ACT, Western Australia, and South East and Northern Queensland.

Invictus Australia carries on the legacy of the Invictus Games every day in local communities, so all veterans and their families can benefit from sporting communities, particularly contemporary and ‘at risk’ veterans.
