InterCity in Finland
InterCity is a train type operated by VR Group, Finland’s national rail company. It is the main train type in Finland, as the older express trains consisting of the older blue carriages, are almost nonexistent.
History
1990s
In the 1990s VR was planning to replace the express train carriages in hopes to modernize the railway fleet. The first, one story x -series Carriages were built in the 80s and 90s by Transtech, Valmet and VR’s Pasilan konepaja. The newer double decker d -series carriages have been produced since 1998 by Transtech and Talgo. Double decker carriages were first used on IC 41 (Helsinki-Vaasa-Helsinki)
2000s
In the summer of 2000 VR launched the train type IC2 with only double decker carriages and no restaurant car. In 2003 VR ordered new sleeper cars from Talgo to replace the old blue carriages. The Edm series carriages have been used since 2006 and have been ordered since.
2010s
The livery changed in 2010 from red and white to green and white.
The intercity2 name was removed in 2016
