  • Comment: It doesn't look as if Vose has any notability apart from the trivial fact of his annual act as a reverse Ebenezer Scrooge, giving a turkey to a rich guy's family (to put it bluntly). His name is mentioned in National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation and I don't see how a standalone article about him could ever contain any information other than that. But if there are in fact multiple secondary sources providing in-depth info about other aspects of his life, please add that! bonadea contributions talk 10:41, 16 October 2024 (UTC)

Horace Vose (12 May, 1840- 20 December, 1913) was the supplier of thanksgiving turkey for the White House from 1873-1913.[1][2]

Early Years

Little is known about Horace's childhood, Horace was born in Rhode Island in 1840 to Charles Babcock Vose (1807-1869) and Mary Jane Thompson (1816-1883). Vose was raised on a farm and helped deal with turkeys on his uncle's farm. in 1870 he was working as a stable hand, and in 1872 he married Susan Amanda Cheseboro.[2]

Turkey's to the White House

Ulysses Grant was searching for a turkey for Thanksgiving in 1873, Senator Henry B. Anthony recommended Horace to Grant and bought a 36 pound from the farmer and enjoyed it and sent Vose a letter of appreciation and Vose sent turkeys to Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, and William Howard Taft.[3][4][5] During the 40 years he sent turkeys to the presidents, he worked as a an auctioneer, an ice dealer, a horse dealer, and a livery owner. He also traveled across the country to buy livestock for his farm.[2]
