Introduction

Hakikur Rahman (born June 11, 1957) is a Bangladeshi academic, researcher, and editor with over 30 years of experience in the fields of information and communication technology (ICT), knowledge management, and sustainable development. He currently serves as the Dean and Professor of the School of Engineering at Presidency University, Bangladesh, and as the Research Director at the Ansted University Sustainability Research Institute in Malaysia. He has authored and edited over 25 books, contributed to more than 200 scholarly articles, and has been involved in several international ICT4D (ICT for Development) projects funded by organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Bank, and the European Union.

Early Life and Education

Hakikur Rahman was born in Jessore, Bangladesh. He completed his secondary education at Nawabpur Government High School in 1972, followed by his higher secondary education at Notre Dame College, Dhaka, in 1975. He pursued his undergraduate studies at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 1981. He earned his Master's in Electrical Engineering from the American University of Beirut in 1986, under a USAID scholarship. Rahman later obtained two PhDs: one in Computer Engineering from Ansted University, UK, in 2001, and another in Information Communication Technology (ICT) from Empresarial University of Costa Rica in 2011.

Academic Career

Rahman has held several prominent academic positions throughout his career. He currently holds the position of Dean and Professor at the School of Engineering at Presidency University, Bangladesh, a role he has occupied since 2024. Prior to this, he was a Professor at the Asian University of Bangladesh and the Chair of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department at BRAC University. He was also a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the University of Minho, Portugal, where his research focused on knowledge management, open innovation, and organizational learning for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Research Contributions

Rahman’s research encompasses topics such as ICT4D, knowledge management, sustainable development, and open innovation. He has been the Chief Editor of the *International Journal of Information Communication Technologies and Human Development* (IJICTHD) since 2009, and the *International Journal of Knowledge Management* (IJKM) since 2024. His published works have contributed to advancements in areas like e-government, data mining, and AI applications.

Professional Engagements

In addition to his academic roles, Rahman has been involved in several notable projects. He served as the Director of the Computer Division at Bangladesh Open University, where he led the establishment of the institution's computerized network. He also worked as a consultant and MIS expert for the Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge Authority, and as the National Project Coordinator for the Sustainable Development Networking Programme (SDNP) in Bangladesh, a project funded by the UNDP aimed at promoting sustainable development through the use of ICT.

Awards and Recognition

Rahman has been the recipient of several fellowships and awards in recognition of his contributions to academia and research. These include: - USAID Scholarship (1983-1986) for his Master’s studies. - Salzburg Seminar Fellow (2000-2002) for attending Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) meetings. - Commonwealth of Learning Fellow (2004, 2006) for his participation in Pan-Commonwealth Forum (PCF) conferences.

In 2013, he was named among the "Top 100 Scientists" by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, UK. He was also awarded the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 for his lifelong contributions to academia and research.
