Franco Farina is an internationally recognized tenor who has performed at many of the world’s leading opera companies. He holds Bachelors and Masters degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Richard Miller. He later attended The Hartt School as a graduate assistant and The Juilliard School’s American Opera Center. He was awarded a Doctorate in Music from Oberlin College.
Career

[edit]Farina made his European debut at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, performing in La Bohème. This marked the beginning of his career in major European opera houses. Early in his career, he often performed the roles of Alfredo in La Traviata and the Duke in Rigoletto, with his debut at Royal Opera House Covent Garden in the latter role.
He made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Rodolfo in La Bohème opposite Mirella Freni. He later performed at the Metropolitan Opera in roles such as La Traviata, Madama Butterfly, Eugene Onegin, Carmen, Un Ballo in Maschera, Turandot, Il Trovatore, Aida, Cavalleria Rusticana, Tosca, and Norma.
Later career
[edit]Throughout his career, Farina developed a close association with the Opéra National de Paris, debuting in a new production of Eugene Onegin. He returned to Paris for roles in Simon Boccanegra, Norma, Macbeth, Attila, La Bohème, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot.
Farina has frequently performed at the Vienna State Opera, appearing in roles such as Mefistofele under Riccardo Muti, La Traviata, Un Ballo in Maschera, Don Carlos (both French and Italian versions), Simon Boccanegra, Aida, La Bohème, and Tosca. At the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, he made his debut in La Bohème and later performed Don Alvaro in La Forza del Destino.
In 2011, Farina ventured into Wagnerian roles, debuting as Tristan in Tristan und Isolde, followed by Tannhäuser. He also performed Florestan in Fidelio, Siegmund in Die Walküre, and Samson. He has performed Tristan for the Flemish Opera and Teatro Real Madrid, and Samson at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland.
Recent performances
[edit]Recent notable engagements include the Verdi Requiem with the Berlin Philharmonic under James Conlon, a concert tour of Otello with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under Daniel Harding, and his debut in China as Calaf in Turandot with the Beijing Opera. Farina also performed his first Tannhäuser in Hamburg, Florestan in Fidelio in Cologne, and Siegmund in Die Walküre with the Graz Opera.
Farina has performed extensively in Italy, with appearances at the Arena di Verona, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, and Teatro La Fenice in Venice. He has also performed in Japan, including roles such as Don José with the Opéra de Lyon under Kent Nagano, Calaf under Zubin Mehta, and Radamès.
His repertoire includes a wide range of roles, such as Pollione in Norma, Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Canio in Pagliacci, Turridu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Don José in Carmen, and the title role in Andrea Chénier.
Teaching
[edit]In addition to his performing career, Farina is a vocal teacher and has conducted master classes in the United States, China, Japan, and Europe.
