A distribution system operator (DSO) differs from a distribution network operator (DNO) in the sense that the DSO has a responsibility of the system working. To be able to control this they normally need smart meters in their grid and an active monitoring. But it differs a lot between countries what term that is used. In Great Britain the term DNO is commonly used while in most of continental Europe the term DSO is used. [1]
