Draft:Diccionario Digital del Español (DIDES)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Diccionario Digital del Español is a general pan-Hispanic and usage dictionary of Spanish edited and produced at the International Lexicography Centre (University of Valladolid).

It is a digital (or electronic) dictionary (and only digital) managed by the Danish company Ordbogen A/S. This company is dedicated to creating products and services related to the language industry.

Foundations

The dictionary is subject to a continuous process of creation, revision and updating: new lexicographical articles (or entries) are added every day. Any existing article that is deemed necessary to be modified, deleted, reworked, etc. is also modified at any time.

The aim of this dictionary is to describe all the known and well-documented usages and variants of the words and expressions currently used in Spanish, wherever they are used. It is compiled following the methodological principles known as post-editing lexicography. This methodology has three steps. The first step consists of using one or several large language models (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) with which a potential lexicographic article is compiled (or created). This is done by engaging in a dialogue with one or more chatbots, which supply all requested lexicographic data for a particular word or expression. The second step is carried out by the human lexicographer. They analyse the "dialogue data" in order to select the data it considers appropriate, which are those documented in the lexicographic sources used. The third step is carried out by the editor responsible for the dictionary, who ‘validates’ the revised and accepted data that have been placed in each of the slots of the software that manages the construction of the dictionary (the Dictionary Writing System). From that moment on, the lexicographical article is available and can be consulted with full guarantee.

Innovations

The Diccionario Digital del Espñol has no space constraints and offers a number of relevant innovations:

  • All articles or entries describe a word or expression indicating (when necessary) its grammatical category, inflection, conjugation (if it is a verb), definition, example, synonym, antonym, external links, and different kinds of lexicographical notes (usage, grammar, pragmatics, etc.).
  • Default screen
    Default screen
The dictionary has two screens, one by default, which shows the lemma, whether it is a single word or several words (expression), as well as the data that primarily describe it: grammatical category, different forms, inflections and conjugations (if it is a verb), definition, general lexicographical notes and a list of synonyms and clickable expressions in which the lemma appears in any of its possible forms:
  • Extended screen
    Extended screen
The second screen opens when you click on ‘Ver más’. When it is displayed, we have lexicographical data that contextualise the meaning(s) and/or usage of the lemma: examples, phrases, synonyms, lexicographical notes, links to internal and external dictionary texts, including links to royalty-free photos and Wikipedia entries:
  • All lemmas are real words and expressions (e.g. profesor and profesora are different lemmas). It never uses lemmas like profesor, a which are common in Spanish dictionaries.
  • It describes in detail both words (toro) and expressions (toro de lidia, ver los toros desde la barrera), symbols, acronyms and any other element with meaning(s) and/or linguistic function.
  • It differentiate between the specific meaning (man, woman, etc.) and the generic meaning (person).
  • It uses different search systems; for example by searching for toro?, toro* , toro and *, it retrieves a list of expressions in which the word toro is present.
  • It differentiate between the literal and the figurative senses of words and expressions. For example, one of the definitions of toro is ‘a very strong and corpulent man’, which is a figurative sense of this word.
  • It does not use lexicographical formulae, such as defining construction as ‘the action and effect of constructing’. Nor does it use abbreviations.
