Draft:David Vilchez

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Vilchez (1978) is a Spanish biochemist and molecular biologist. He is a professor at the Institute for Integrated Stress Response Signaling and the Cluster of Excellence CECAD at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Cologne, Germany[1]. His research primarily focuses on proteostasis, aging, and the cellular stress responses that affect organismal health and longevity.

Life

[edit]

Vilchez studied biology at the University of Barcelona from 1996 to 2001, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He continued his education at the same institution, obtaining a master's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology between 2003 and 2005. He completed his doctoral studies under the supervision of Prof. Joan Guinovart at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) from 2003 to 2008. His academic career has taken him to research institutions, including the Salk Institute for Biological Research and the University of California, Berkeley.

Research Focus

[edit]

Vilchez's research aims to understand how cellular stress responses regulate proteostasis and influence aging and age-related diseases. He investigates the mechanisms by which cells maintain protein homeostasis and how dysregulation can lead to diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders. His work includes exploring the implications of proteostasis in plant biology and its relevance to improving human health.

Career

[edit]

Vilchez has held various academic positions, including Research Group Leader at the Institute for Genetics and CECAD at the University of Cologne[1] from 2014 to 2021. In 2021, he was appointed a permanent professor at the same university[2]. He has also been involved in numerous institutional responsibilities, such as spokesperson for a DFG Research Unit initiative and Coordinator for research areas at the Cologne Excellence Cluster CECAD[3]. His postdoctoral training included a fellowship at the Li Ka Shing Center, University of California, Berkeley.

Awards and honors

[edit]

Throughout his career, Vilchez has received awards, including the ERC Starting Grant[4], the Josep Trueta Award[5] for the best research from L’Acadèmia de Ciències Mèdiques i de la Salut de Catalunya i de Balears in 2008, and the Award for Young Scientists from the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM). He has also been recognized with the IRB Alumni Excellence Award[6] and ranked number one in the Ramon y Cajal grant in Life Sciences by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Spain.
