Clare Uchima (Japanese: 内間くれあ, born January 14 1983) is a Scottish-Japanese musician, best known for her work as a touring and session keyboardist and vocalist for artists such as Harry Styles, Kae Tempest, Pet Shop Boys, and KT Tunstall. [1]

Early life

[edit]

Uchima was born on January 14 1983 in Osaka, Japan, to a Scottish mother and Japanese father. Her Japanese grandparents were from Okinawa. She moved to Scotland at the age of fifteen as her mother wanted her and her siblings to be fully bilingual and bicultural. Unable to speak English, she focused on music.[2] She spent a gap year studying dance in Edinburgh and went onto study jazz music in London. Afterwards, she started her career as a session and touring musician[3]

Career Beginnings

She started uploading original music on YouTube under the moniker 'Clara Belle'[4], also providing vocals under the same name for The Laszlo Project's 2010 song 'Zeitgeist'[5].

In 2013, she joined Ghostpoet on tour[6]. For several years, she has been a touring and session musician for Kae Tempest[7]. She also performed alongside Harry Styles, joining him on tour and including performances on Saturday Night Live and The Graham Norton Show.

She has performed with many artists such as HOTEI[8], Royal Blood[9], and Dua Lipa[10]. She has also released several solo songs and was the lyricist and vocalist for 'The Way Of The Ghost' from the Sony Playstation game 'Ghost of Tsushima' in 2020.

Uchima began performing with Pet Shop Boys in 2022, joining them on their Dreamworld Tour and Unity Tour with New Order[11]. She played the keyboard and provided vocals, both backing and co-lead on ' What Have I Done To Deserve This?'[12].
