Brighton Rocks International Film Festival (BRIFF) is held annually in Brighton in June. The festival's stated mission is to "provide a platform for original voices that celebrate the work of filmmakers working outside of the mainstream."[1] It is especially supportive of young and emerging filmmakers and films that explore LGBTQIA+ themes.[2][3]

History

[edit]

The festival was founded in 2017 by Dr. James Rowlins. The first edition of the festival was held at Dukes at Komedia cinema in 2017 with an awards ceremony presided over by the actor Patrick Bergin. The director Ben Wheatley, William Nicolson, Tim Pope, Jo Brand, Jenny Runacre and Amit Shah have been guests of honor at subsequent festivals.

Brighton Rocks International Film Festival receives support from its partners BIMM Screen & Film School and the British Film Institute (via Film Hub South East). In 2023 it became a qualifying festival for the British Independent Film Awards.

The festival holds special screenings throughout the year and provides broadcast content for Latest TV.[4]

Its parent company Rocks Film Festivals runs the Hastings Rocks International Film Festival, held annually in April, and has also curated film festivals in London and Los Angeles.

Brighton Rocks is currently the largest film festival in the Brighton area for independent cinema. It continues to be directed by Dr. James Rowlins, who is assisted by deputy director Sarah Smith and a team of programmers.
