Battle

[edit]

The rear guard of the Polish army was at Markuszów. It was attacked from the east (from the direction of Garbów) by Cossacks who were unaware of the political situation. The Polish commander, distraught by the behavior of his relative, led his loyal troops (12 cavalry squadrons) into a senseless fight, personally leading and showing incredible bravado, according to contemporary accounts - seeking death. The Cossacks were repelled and thrown back towards Garbów. About 20 Poles died in this battle, including the general inspector of cavalry, Gen. Janusz Stanisław lliński.[3]
