Algarvian Portuguese (Portuguese: português algarvio) is a dialect of Portuguese spoken in the Portuguese region of Algarve

Characteristics

Most of the features of Algarvian are shared with Alentejan:

The diphthong /ou̯/ is monophthongized to [o]: sou /ˈsou̯/ > [so] (I am) The diphthong /ei̯/ is monophthongized to [e], except before other vowels, when in the last syllable of a word, or generally before /t/: maneira /mɐˈnei̯ɾɐ/ > [mɐˈneɾɐ] (way) areia /ɐˈɾei̯ɐ/ > [ɐˈɾei̯ɐ] (sand) seis /sei̯ʃ/ > [sei̯ʃ] (six) The diphthong /ai̯/ is monophthongized to [a] before "x" (/ʃ/): caixa /ˈkai̯ʃɐ/ > [ˈkaʃɐ] (box) /b/, /d/, and /ɡ/ are always pronounced as stops and not as fricatives: manteiga /mɐ̃ˈtei̯ɡɐ/ > [mɐ̃ˈteɡɐ] (butter) idade /iˈdadɨ/ > [iˈdad] (age) abrir /ɐˈbɾiɾ/ > [ɐˈbɾiɾ] (to open)

Features secific to Algarvian:

Final unstressed "-o" is eliminated. tudo /ˈtudu/ > [ˈtud] (all, averything) Final "s", "z" are pronounced [ʒ] when followed by a vowel, instead of [z]: os olhos /uʃˈɔʎuʃ/ > [uʒˈɔʎʃ]
