The American Muslim & Multifaith Women’s Empowerment Council (AMMWEC), formally The American Muslim Women's Empowerment Council (AMWEC), was founded in 2009. It is a 501(c)(3) organization. According to the website, AMMWEC represents “proud American Muslim women leaders who unite to: strengthen our community, confront bigotry in all its forms, celebrate cultural heritage, and build enduring bonds with fellow Americans of all faiths.”[1]

Programs

Some of AMMWEC’s programs include:

Law enforcement internships. AMMWEC has partnered with the FBI, CIA, DHS, and local law enforcement like LAPD to place young Muslim women in law enforcement internships.[3]

Annual interfaith iftar. AMMWEC holds an annual interfaith iftar that brings Muslims, Jews, Christians, Hindus and other faiths together. AMMWEC’s March 2024 interfaith iftar had over 100 attendees.[4] In April 2024, AMMWEC joined its partner organization, New England Bangladeshi American Foundation (NEBAF) in an interfaith iftar in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[5]

Helpline for women. Additionally, the organization provides a helpline for women facing anti-Muslim bigotry as well as domestic abuse.[6]

Lay Leadership Projects. AMMWEC has initiated a “Muslim Leadership Fellowship” which seeks to “create a support network among patriotic Muslim Americans committed to mainstream civic engagement and to connect them with national leaders eager to engage inspiring voices in Muslim communities.”[7] Additionally, the organization hosts an annual leadership conference for women, and has a career mentorship program for Muslim women that seeks “to develop leadership skills, build confidence, and propel career advancement.”[8] AMMWEC's Youth Bridge project “aims to combat hatred, discrimination, and radicalization” in youth.[9] In September 2024, AMMWEC hosted German students as part of this project.[10]

Issues

Peace Between Muslim World and Israel. In June 2022, AMMWEC helped organize several Pakistani-Americans to travel to Israel.[11] AMMWEC has partnered with Sharaka to promote peace in the Middle East.[12] In November 2022, AMMWEC also joined Sharaka in a trip to Bahrain and Israel in support of the Abraham Accords.[13]

Hamas and October 7,2023. AMMWEC issued a press release opposing Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack shortly after the attack,[14] and also held an interfaith peace vigil outside of the White House in solidarity with the victims.[15] AMMWEC has co-sponsored the screening of the documentary “Screams Before Silence,” which addresses Hamas’ sexual violence committed on October 7, 2023, in Los Angeles.[16] Anila Ali, AMMWEC’s board chair and president, also attended a screening of the film at the White House, and spoke at another screening of the film in New York City.[17] Anila Ali also spoke out against Hamas when she joined Vice President Kamala Harris at a White House event on conflict-related sexual violence.[18] In December 2023, AMMWEC joined with the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) for a solidarity mission to Israel to oppose Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack against Israel.[19] Anila Ali also stood with Israel's Ambassador to the US Michael Herzog in calling on Hamas to release the hostages.[20] For the one year anniversary of the October 7 attack, AMMWEC met with the families of the people held hostage by Hamas,[21] and Anila Ali published an op-ed in Newsweek on her thoughts on the attack.[22]

University protests and interfaith efforts. In August 2024, AMMWEC leaders Anila Ali and Soraya Deen opposed UCLA for aiding and abetting efforts to exclude Jewish students from parts of campus.[23] In July 2024, Mrs. Deen also spoke at Notre Dame’s Religious Liberty Summit about fostering better relations between Muslim and Jewish communities after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.[24] In May 2024, AMMWEC has also opposed “protests on the Stanford University campus featuring dangerous chants promoting violence and antisemitism.”[25] Additionally, in August 2023, AMMWEC attended the IRF Religious Freedom Summit in Los Angeles, where they stood in solidarity with Christian Pakistanis.[26]

Antisemitism. In September 2024, AMMWEC spoke with Jewish communities in New Jersey to speak about rising anti-Semitism.[27] In December 2022, AMMWEC joined other groups in Karachi, Pakistan, to light candles in celebration of Hannukah and in opposition of anti-Semitism.[28]
