Álvaro Fernández-Llamazares (Barcelona, 1988) is a Spanish ethnobiologist with extensive experience in the study of Indigenous Peoples and their contributions to biodiversity conservation.[1]

Biography

[edit]

He received his PhD in Environmental Sciences from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain) in 2015.[2] As part of his doctoral studies, he carried out 18 months of fieldwork in the Bolivian Amazon, documenting the local impacts of global environmental change on the Indigenous territory of the Tsimane' people. His doctoral thesis was evaluated with the distinction "Cum Laude" and awarded with the Extraordinary PhD Award [3] and the Research Prize in Environmental Sciences of the College of Environmental Scientists of Catalonia.[4]

Between 2016 and 2022, he carried out 7 years of postdoctoral research at the University of Helsinki (Finland), affiliated with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS).[5] During this time, he carried out long periods of fieldwork in Kenya and Madagascar, and research stays at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom) and at Indiana University Bloomington (United States).

In 2022, he obtained a Ramón y Cajal fellowship from the Ministry of Science and Innovation of the Government of Spain, and in January 2023, he joined as a researcher the Botany Unit of the Department of Animal Biology, Plant Biology and Ecology (BABVE) and the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA-UAB) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain).[6]

In September 2023, he received a Starting Grant of 1.5 million euros from the European Research Council to develop the IEK-CHANGES project on changes in the ethnobotanical knowledge systems of Amazonian Indigenous Peoples, and the social-ecological impacts that these changes may entail.[7]

Research

[edit]

He has published more than 90 scientific articles, in some of the most influential and prestigious journals in the world, such as Nature, Trends in Ecology and Evolution, Current Biology, Global Environmental Change, People and Nature, or Conservation Letters, among others.[8] His research has significantly contributed to advancing scientific knowledge on the roles of Indigenous Peoples in biodiversity conservation, through geospatial analyses, and consolidating empirical methodologies to document changes in traditional ecological knowledge systems.[9] His work is based on more than 30 months of ethnographic field-based experience with Indigenous and local communities in countries such as Bolivia, Kenya or Madagascar.[10]

A cornerstone of his scientific career has been the participation in several intergovernmental processes on biodiversity within the framework of the United Nations.[11][12] His research has been strongly linked to the work of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).[11] He is one of the 145 authors of the IPBES Global Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, the most comprehensive report on the status and trends of biodiversity on the planet.[13]

Scientific dissemination

[edit]

His academic career has always been characterized by a firm commitment to scientific dissemination and outreach. He has written articles for numerous media outlets, such as the Ara newspaper[14] or The Conversation,[15] and has participated in important scientific podcasts, such as the official podcast of the journal Nature,[16] or the Save Our Planet podcast.[17] His research has always received wide media visibility,[18] being featured in The Guardian,[19] The Vancouver Sun,[20] National Geographic,[21] or Mongabay.[22]

He has also made extensive use of scientific videography, having participated in numerous dissemination videos on his research in the field of ethnobiology.[23][24] In 2020, a short scientific dissemination film was published, entitled “Stories of the Amazon”, which highlighted the main results of his research with Indigenous communities in the Amazon.[25] He also participated in the ethnobotanical dissemination film “Listening to what the plants of the Catalan Pyrenees tell us”, launched in 2024.[26]

In 2022, he starred in the documentary feature film “Shepherds of the Earth” by Finnish filmmaker Iiris Härmä.[11] This film documents his ethnographic work with the Daasanach community of northern Kenya.[27] The documentary has more than 21,100 views on the Finnish public television website portal[11] and received excellent reviews in the Finnish press.[28][29] It has been screened at more than 40 film festivals, has won numerous international awards, and was nominated for two Jussi Awards in 2023 (the Finnish Academy Film Awards).[30]

Awards and recognitions

2023 Winner of an ERC Starting Grant from the European Research Council.[31]

2019 Extraordinary PhD Award from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain.[32]

2015 Research Prize in Environmental Sciences, College of Environmental Scientists of Catalonia, Spain.[33]
