'Functional group' and 'homologous series' are becoming confused. Many of the articles listed in this category are not functional groups but are homologous series. For example, Acid anhydride is not a functional group but a homologous series. It has a functional group; the carbonyl group, but in its itself it is not a functional group.

We need a category for homologous series. I am going about expanding the homologous series page right now. I am not to confident on making whole new categories so maybe someone else can do that.

I don't think we should remove anhydride from the functional groups list. Obviously, in addition to the functional group category, we can include it in the homologous series category. Personally, I don't think 'Homologous series' deserves it's own category, but I am not the final authority on these matters. ~K 00:09, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Should urea (and guanidine) be here? We are naming after them, but then a lot of other "groups" is missing, eg. oxalate, formamide, malonic acid etc. ChristianB (talk) 01:06, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think these pages would be better if we could differentiate between, functional groups, substituents and families of compounds. For example, methoxy is a substituent and maybe a functional group but not a family of compounds. lactones are a family of compounds and maybe a functional group but not a substituent Spookyrunner13 (talk) 00:58, 17 May 2010 (UTC)spookyrunner13[reply]

There is no page for the primary, secondary or tertiary ammonium cation functional groups

There is a page for Quaternary ammonium cations but not primary, secondary or tertiary. They contain R-R-R-NH+, R-R-NH2+ or R-NH3+.

These groups are very important both as intermediates and in salts or zwitterions. See the section Ammonium#Organic_ammonium_ions for more information.

A page on this type of group would be very useful :-)
