Asians in the Netherlands (Dutch: Aziaten in Nederland), also referred to as Asian Dutch (Aziatische Nederlanders) or Dutch Asians (Nederlandse Aziaten), are citizens or residents of the Netherlands whose ancestry traces back to Asia. The majority of Dutch Asians hail from Turkey and Indonesia of which the latter was a former Dutch colony and from countries such as Syria, China, Iraq, India, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Philipphines, Vietnam, Thailand and Hong Kong.[2]

There is also a sizable community of Asian Caribbeans who hail from the former and present Dutch overseas territories which include Suriname and the former Netherlands Antilles; now Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire, Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius and Saba. These are mainly from Suriname and include Indian, Javanese and Chinese Surinamese people.[3][4]

History

Discrimination

[edit]

Racism and discrimination against mainly Southeast and East Asians has a long history, both in the Netherlands and in the former Dutch colonies such as the Dutch East Indies and Suriname.[5]

After the coronavirus pandemic, hatred against Asians began increasing worldwide, which resulted in many hate crimes.[6] Besides this Asians have also faced stereotypes and are often dubbed as a model minority.

The Asian communty also objected to the racial slur "Coolie" (Koelie), which they consider as charged as the N word. A judge also ruled that it was used in a insulting way, and fined a man €150 for the comment online. “Koelie”, originally was used to refer to Indian and other Asian (Chinese and Javanese) indentured labourers in Suriname after the abolition of slavery. The word refers to a period, when inter-ethnic tensions where rising in Suriname.[7]
