We require this information to verify that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia, and because most image licenses require giving credit to the image's creator.

I normally do add edit summaries, forgot in this case. Next time! If you compared versions you'll see that what i added was cited and sourced, so I'm not sure what the purpose of the second part of your note is.
