Help me!

[edit]

Please help me with...

I am trying to update and edit the page for Jan Perry. I fear I've made a mess of it. The current references are out dated and/or dead.

How do I bring her page current and add new information?

Barrider (talk) 23:33, 19 June 2015 (UTC) barrider[reply]

Hi and welcome. Sorry for the delay in replying. I don't see you doing anything too bad except signing the article. Signatures don't go on articles. If readers want to see who wrote the article, they can go to the page history. As I read, I made one change. My understanding is that the officeholder template is meant to hold elected offices, not external jobs. Those can and should be mentionned in the body of the article. Another thing to keep in mind, is that when fixing broken references, it is best to leave the broken reference until you find a new one. A lot of things are duplicated on the web, so sometimes an editor can find an alternate link if they have the title etc.
For how to improve the article further, I reccommend looking at articles on similar topics that have earned a higher article rating and trying to immitate them. Another thing to keep in mind is to make sure to write neutrally and cite sources. If you have more specific questions, feel free to ask. I will keep an eye on the page. Hope that helps! Relationship to Jan Perry

[edit]

Hello Barrider! Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia. Can you please disclose any relationship that you have to Jan Perry? In particular, do you have any professional or personal relationship to Jan Perry or her office? Wikipedia's COI policy requires full disclosure of any such relationship. Hello back to you ! In answer to your question, the answer is no. I have been, and continue to be, very interested in the important role of a diverse culture of women in Los Angeles County politics, including political legacies and community public service. I am semi-retired and very interested in learning how to become active as a Wikipedian. Since I have the time and the desire, I thought volunteering my time to learn and expand Wikipedia entries would be of value to the Wikipedia community. I love research too, and have the time for it, so I am hoping that I've chosen the path here, in this discussion, to be a collaborating contributor to Wikipedia. Kind regards, Barrider.

Barrider, I've removed your additions to Jan Perry and restored the earlier version. I've set out my reasoning on the Talk page there, where you are welcome to comment, but I thought though that it'd be helpful to drop a note here too. There were two basic (and extensive) problems that caused me to undo your additions - the first was that the material was not consistent with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy - the new material was far too favorable, far too full of praise; and the sprinkling of Perry quotes throughout the article made it read like a press release, or a campaign brochure. Second, there were sections that had been lifted directly from external sites and dropped into the article. While of course Wikipedia material always has to be sourced, the language used here has to be the words of the editors - not the words of the source material - because simply moving the material here may be a copyright violation. You should go read WP:COPYVIO for more information there. Anyhow - as you go forward in editing, just try to bear in mind that Wikipedia tries to be a neutral collection of material on any topic. If you want to talk about this more as it applies to Jan Perry, probably the article Talk page is the better place, where other editors can weigh in as well. I hope this is helpful, and I hope you keep editing - just be sure to get a good grasp on these various policies. Thanks! JohnInDC (talk) 15:47, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Barrider. Thanks for the clarification. I just wanted to ask since almost all of your Wikipedia edits were related to the Jan Perry article. As you can imagine, Wikipedia often gets edits from the PR departments of political campaigns, so we have to be careful to maintain a neutral point-of-view and not allow editors with a conflict of interest to skew articles. Kaldari (talk) 05:08, 15 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there - yes, I hear your concerns, I've been reading some research and opinions on the conflicts from PR launches into Wikipedia. I understand the COI issues. At some point, I'm going to take another pass at the article for Jan Perry, (as I mentioned before, I follow our city governance) - but I'm going slowly and hopefully, it will conform to Wikipedia's neutrality standards. I'm not interested in giving up and welcome input and constructive advice from other editors. Barrider (talk) 20:36, 16 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Good! The key I think is to describe her important contributions (vs detailing them all), and doing so in a way that doesn't inflate them or present them as unalloyed successes (if they weren't). Stick with it! JohnInDC (talk) 21:08, 16 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
