User:Cegalegolog99/Signature Tutorial

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For Windows Vista or higher

This is a tutorial for customizing your signature by CegaLEGOlog99! It uses a user called BobJSmith.

He currently has a very simple signature:
BobJSmith

Where do you customize it?

[edit]

You'll find it at the page titled Special:Preferences.

Bold, italic, etc.

[edit]

You can make your signature bold by putting 3 apostrophes before and after the text. Similarly, you can do italic with 2 apostrophes before and after the word. <s>Strikethrough</s> will become Strikethrough, Superscript will become Superscript, and you can find lots of other formatting where you edit a page.

Bob wants his signature to be bold italic, so he types [[User:BobJSmith|'''''BobJSmith''''']].

Here's what his signature looks like now:

BobJSmith

The 4 basic colors

[edit]

You probably know that black is the standard color of text on Wikipedia. Blue is the standard color for hyperlinks. Once you have clicked on the link, however, the link turns purple. And finally, links to nonexistent pages are red.

More customization of color

[edit]

Here are some questions you might be wondering:

  • How can I make a black link?
  • How can I keep a link blue, purple, or red?
  • How can I make it even more different colors?

Here's how. First, type <font color= . Next, type the color you want the text to be in quotation marks and end with >. When you're done coloring the font, type .
Bob wants his signature to be black, gray, and silver. So here's what he types:

[[User:BobJSmith|<font color="black">'''''Bob'''''</font><font color="gray">'''''J'''''</font><font color="silver">'''''Smith'''''</font>]]

And here's the end result:

BobJSmith

The font face

[edit]

Bob doesn't much like the font Arial. He likes the font Rockwell. So, before each section of his signature, he types <font face="Rockwell"> before each section. Note that the font face is in quotation marks. You can use the font YOU like, too! Here's his final signature:

BobJSmith

What not to use

[edit]
  • Big signatures
  • Signatures with pictures (instead, use Unicode characters)
  • Signatures with line breaks
  • Signatures that are hard to read

Customizing it another way

[edit]

Uncheck the box "Treat the above as wiki markup". Then, type text other than your username into the box. That text is your "nickname". A disadvantage is that it cannot be formatted any way.
