As party vote works differently to the first-past-the-post election for members, I think giving only the “Party vote winner” is a mistake. With the opportunities this new template affords, we could actually do something more useful, like include a bar to show the distribution of party votes. See {{Stacked bar}} or {{Composition bar/advanced}}, which would give outputs like those to the side (using data from Napier).

Personally, I think Stacked bar is preferable, though I would like to have the labels either displayed smaller, or displayed on hover as title-text, possibly with percentages. (Either of these changes would have to be implemented at that template.) — HTGS (talk) 03:52, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

it looks cool but i feel like it might be a pain to keep updated, thoughts? TheLoyalOrder (talk) 03:22, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Another potential for centralisation? At this point I think we will always just have a whole bunch of work to do following an election anyway. Remember the vote tables have to be input too.
I might at least add a test to make sure it stops displaying the bar once the election is out of date. Something like |partyvote_date=2023, which would compare against a fixed number to be updated at this template. — HTGS (talk) 04:35, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have now done exactly that. The moment we shift the test to check against 2026, all 2023 party vote bars will stop displaying.
Also, fwiw, I am really happy with this bar, which succinctly gives relevant info about the electorate’s vote disposition. Oh, and in case no one noticed, I implemented title-text to display on hover, at least for the percentages for now :) — HTGS (talk) 05:13, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
oh thats a great idea TheLoyalOrder (talk) 05:51, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

MP Salary

[edit]

I have disabled the Salary item for now, for a few reasons. First, I’m fairly sure that the default number (for an ordinary member) isn’t actually correct, as the wrong number from that article was copied, and it also updated in June. Second, we cannot list the ordinary member salary at every electorate; we will have to make sure that each member has his or her salary checked. So keeping the salaries unlisted for now will allow us to roll out the infobox much quicker than if we had to check and fill the individual salaries. At the point we re-enable it, I suggest the template also be given a checkbox to enable (and disable) each page, to allow for editors to say “I just don’t know this member’s salary at this point”. OR, when we re-enable it, we make it much more automatic:

Per the legislation salaries for ordinary members, and others, will continue to update over time, and this should probably be built into this template to avoid having to update it every year. But at that point, we should probably just build out a table (as its own template, or as a sub-page of this one) that is kept up to date on each MP’s various responsibilities and spits out true and trustworthy salaries across the board. To do this, we would need to have the means and interest to keep the thing updated—I know I don’t—because it would not take long for it to fall well out of date if the one or two people who manage it forget to keep up wth it; though probably still less out of date than the individual pages would be if all had to be manually checked and updated.

Beyond all that, arguably, salary data for MPs just isn’t that necessary for the electorates pages. I could certainly see it being more valuable for the pages of the MPs themselves, but I really just don’t have strong feelings one way or another for this template. — HTGS (talk) 02:53, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

you make fair points, I'd be fine with not including it TheLoyalOrder (talk) 05:26, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Centralised data lists

[edit]

Hey @TheLoyalOrder, seeing as you’re centralising most of the data for the current and previous MPs—via {{NZ officeholder data}} and {{NZ previous officeholder}}—I think it’d be worth also centralising the member images and member electorate offices, just so that when the whole lot are updated they don’t get out of sync and we don’t have to simultaneously go through and update these two parameters at exactly the same time on every article. — HTGS (talk) 01:30, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

sounds like a good idea TheLoyalOrder (talk) 02:06, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
When a new election occurs, we may not have a photo for some of the elected candidates. When updating {{NZ officeholder data}} in this case, should we blank the image, or should we use images from Commons:Category:SVG blank persons placeholders, e.g. File:Blank woman placeholder.svg or File:No portrait blanko.svg?-Gadfium (talk) 04:10, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have been planning to play around with this template until the lack of an image doesn’t create a weird gap. I assume passing no image from {{NZ officeholder data}} is fine? I haven’t looked into that template in any depth, but non-existent data appears to return blank, eg: {{NZ officeholder data|London MP Photo}}
I am still thinking about the use of this template for historical electorates too. — HTGS (talk) 04:23, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
currently using File:No image.png for the 1 mp that doesn't have a photo TheLoyalOrder (talk) 05:57, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Using the last election date isn't ideal when an MP has been in office for longer. For example, Chlöe Swarbrick has been the member for Auckland Central (New Zealand electorate) since the 2020 election, but the infobox currently has her as member for AC since 2023. The election date will have to be per electorate, and would be appropriate for mayors and chairpeople as well.-Gadfium (talk) 04:21, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Wouldn’t mind it linked, either. — HTGS (talk) 04:25, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
