Refractory?

[edit]

With such a high melting point (the highest of any binary compound according to hafnium), why is it important to avoid heat (twice!) and open flames? All around this stuff sounds pretty inert.

Could be subtle vandalism.
The thought crossed my mind, but it just looks really careless. So do we have a connoisseur in the house? ;v) Or was hafnium carbide near a heat source on the USS Maine? Potatoswatter 04:09, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Refractory means that the melting point under vacuum is very high. HfC starts oxidizing (in the presence of an oxidizer of course) at 430C.Apirkle (talk) 20:17, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nuclear control rods?

[edit]

Removed reference to use of HfC in nuclear control rods. I can't find any reference to that application aside from this Wikipedia article.Apirkle (talk) 20:16, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What electrical and thermal conductivity
