Chimney and dome

The stovepipe chimney was a universal feature of all GE Locomotives in the latter part of the 19th Century until the appearance of the 4-2-2 Singles in 1898. The dome position came from the two-ring boiler with the dome on the front ring which Holden introduced in the 90s. Before then he continued with Wordsell's 3-ring boiler with the dome on the middle ring. The advantage of the forward mounting was a short steam passage with reduced pressure drop.
