Choice of Name

[edit]

I have read that Walter P Chrysler chose the name DeSoto in the same way he chose the name Plymouth: a random selection from an American History book (though the case that the former wasn't nearly as strong a choice as the latter seems obvious to me..). Anyway, I have no idea where I read it, but it might have been an old issue of Collectible Automobile, possibly from 1990, featuring the Boattail Riviera. If someone has that issue, they can confirm or deny (like there's any chance of that.) DrChainsaw77 (talk) 05:05, 22 April 2015 (UTC)DrChainsaw77[reply]

DeSoto, not De Soto

[edit]

I have switched the De Soto (automobile) article to DeSoto (automobile). I've always been bothered by the listings for DeSoto being under De Soto, and I moved the main article today. My reasons for doing this are:

  • The National DeSoto Club uses the DeSoto spelling, not De Soto.
  • The Standard catalog of cars series uses DeSoto as well.
  • Collectible Automobile also the non-spaced version.
  • Chrysler specs and advertisements of the 1940s and 1950s for the car also use the non-spaced version in most cases.

Hope that this doesn't trample on any toes or hurts feelings, but to me, it just makes sense to have the article in step with those who follow the marque. Stude62 01:14, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hideaway

[edit]

I always thought the '37 Cord 812 had the first hidden headlites. Who's right? Trekphiler 07:52, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I referenced the Hidden_headlamps article, the Cord 810 had hand-cranked pop-ups, the DeSoto had the 1st powered ones. I added "powered" and fixed the wikilink, the headlight article must've changed its sections. GoTeamVenture (talk) 23:40, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:DeSoto turco.gif

[edit]

Image:DeSoto turco.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Galleries

[edit]

I combined the pics under the spanned years using the gallery format. The pics are smaller, but it eliminates a lot of white space and pics overlapping multiple section breaks. What do you think?? Could the gallery format be used for the many car articles that are experiencing this same problem. OR, we can revert this change and try to re-balance the pics. Junk culture

[edit]

There is not one of those film or TV appearances where a DeSoto is pivotal to the story. Until, unless, it is, it should be taken out as nothing but trivia. Show me Christine, or Eleanor, or Bandit's T/A, I'll leave it in. Otherwise... TREKphiler hit me ♠ 18:35, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Lists of brief appearances and non-essential roles don't shed light on the car. At this time there's no Herbie: Fully Loaded for DeSotos, so... out it goes. Binksternet (talk) 18:49, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted sentence in first paragraph

[edit]

user:David.moreno72 insistently deletes the sentence on the lasting od Desoto badged trucks.

This sentence is just a very short recap of what is already said in the Desoto trucks paragraph.

On the other hand, the whole article has already the "needs additional citations" template.

So, why? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.45.144.119 (talk) 11:54, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The trucks section says

Chrysler Corporation introduced the DeSoto brand of trucks in 1937 to provide a greater number of sales outlets overseas for the American-built Dodge and Fargo commercial vehicles. The DeSoto brand was badge engineered sporadically on Dodge trucks made in Argentina, Australia, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

This gives no end date. You assumed it was after 1961. Was it? Provide a source that says it does and your edits will stand.

Chrysler ended its truck operations in international markets. However, both the DeSoto and Fargo brands continue to be used on trucks made by Askam in Turkey. In 1978, Chrysler sold its share in the Askam venture to its Turkish partners

The problem is that you wrote 'but lasted almost two decades more for Dodge badge engineered trucks sold in several export markets.' The only export market with any date after 1961 is Turkey. Therefore, the correct recap, given the current sources would be 'but lasted almost two decades more for Askam badge engineered trucks sold in Turkey'. If you wish, you can make the changes as I have suggested. For the other exports markets claim to stand, you must provide a source. David.moreno72 (talk) 12:26, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

you can make the changes as I have suggested. Thank you very much indeed for your imperial permission :-). I assume that the changes that you do not "suggest" are forbidden in Wikipedia.
Of course, I give up. Do whatever the hell you want.

[edit]

I'm rewatching Vertigo with James Stewart who drives a white DeSoto as he follows Kim Novak in her Jaguar. I thought I might add that trivia tidbit if we had a suitable section for references in popular culture. Closest we have is an advertising section. Could that be retitled as "popular culture"? Thoughts? I won't be offended if you tell me this Vertigo reference is genuinely too trivial even for WP. :) Msnicki (talk) 01:15, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Askam sections should be improred

[edit]

Askam is the successor of Chrysler Sanayi A.Ş. (Basically Chrysler Turkey) that's why it produced light and heavy trucks under Chrysler, Dodge, Fargo, DeSoto brands. These were mostly badge engineered models.(Exactly the same models with various brands) Chyrsler sold all of it shares in the company in 1978 but comoany was renamed as Askam in 2002 only after DaimlerChrysler was formed. Company hold only Fargo and DeSoto brands. (Not Dodge and Chyrsler brands).

Article does not reflect this situation. Please check turkish Askam page for detailed information
