L'Armee des ombres

[edit]

Great review, good information on actors, director distribution- Ileave you one thought which I exemplify citing the following sentence "...a recounting of Kessel's (and Melville's) memoirs as a member of the French Resistance, inventing characters drawn from real people who actually fought against the Nazi occupation of France during World War II. " Perhaps a more realistic appreciation is "inventing characters loosely based on real people" The movie seems to fit well de Gaulle's effort to unified France after WW II, down playing the role of cooperationists and painting too rosy a picture of French people massively united around the resistance.

Would a next step in Wikipedia consider a critical analysis of the story of movies in a social context? We are influenced by stereotypes in movies- there are plenty of those in Kessel's story -aloof intellectuals with a strong core that are misjudged by society, women as great practical organizers (but dominated by emotions- Mathilde's about carrying her daughter's picture). Too many of the details in the movie are pointblanc not believable. Details about miracle escapes or about the characters. Althoug it compares very well to other war movies, it is definitely a partisan movie, with plenty of narrative concesions. AL

These film articles aren't supposed to be "reviews," not would I relish having political analyses of the film in the film article. We want an encyclopedic, NPOV description of the film. Just my two francs' worth. David Spalding (  ) 02:43, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Summaries of previously published interpretations are great. Just giving your own 2 cents isn't. Cop 663 19:17, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I thought the synopsis of the plot, while long, was thorough and helpful. This is speaking as a person who just viewed the film and was left with a few questions that the synopsis answered. I have one remaining question about the plot, and perhaps a phrase or sentence could be added to the synopsis to explain it: Jean-Francois Jardie rows his brother Luc out to a submarine, but apparently doesn't recognize him. How is this possible given the moonlight? LetJusticeRoll 16:59, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

corrections/ additions for book title "Army of Shadows"

[edit]

The link to the book "Army of Shadows" in this page for thefilm is in error--it's to the wrong book. The correct book, by Joseph Kessel, was published in 1943 in French, and was translated into English by Haakon Chevalier as "Army of Shadows" in 1944 (see worldcat.org for confirmation). I am a total newbie in updating the pages here, but it seems to me appropriate 1) that "Army of Shadows" should get a disambiguation page, 2) Kessel's page should have the translation added to his book list, 3) Chevalier's page should have the translation added to his listed translations, and of course 4) the link to the book on the film page should be to the correct book. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.225.23.139 (talk) 19:10, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
